Chapter 4

The small leather-bound notebook sat on the pristine marble island, an ugly scar of history disrupting the sterile perfection of the modern kitchen. Chloe stared at it, her fingers tightening around the edge of her beige hoodie. Every instinct screamed at her to leave it alone, to ignore the Pandora’s box Arthur had casually shoved onto the counter. Opening it meant validating his chaos, stepping onto a slippery slope where the lies of her childhood would be systematically dismantled. Yet, curiosity and a burning need for the truth gnawed relentlessly at her resolve.
Without taking her eyes off Arthur, Chloe slowly reached out her hand. Toby shrank back slightly, sensing the monumental shift in the atmosphere. "Don't touch it, Chloe," Arthur warned softly, though there was no authority left in his voice, only a fragile plea for mercy. "Once you read the first page, you can't unsee the mess we're in."
"We’ve been living in a mess our entire lives," Chloe fired back, her voice shaking slightly as her fingers brushed the cracked, dry leather. She grabbed the notebook and pulled it toward her, stepping back into a defensive posture with Toby still tucked safely behind her.
She opened the cover. The pages inside were filled with sprawling, frantic handwriting—not Arthur’s precise, rigid script, but their mother’s looping, artistic hand. Dates, financial figures, names of unfamiliar cities, and jagged marginalia filled every square inch of paper. The further she scanned, the more the foundation of her reality warped. It wasn't an abandonment diary; it was a ledger of debts, threats, and a desperate paper trail tracking corporate embezzlement and a shadowy partnership gone catastrophically wrong. Arthur hadn't been protecting them from a broken home; he had been hiding them from the fallout of his own illegal business dealings, using their mother as the scapegoat to shield his own culpability.

Chloe looked up, her expression hardening from worry to a blistering fury that eclipsed her previous fear. The teenage girl who had yelled to protect her little brother now stared at Arthur not as a tyrant, but as a pathetic architect of his own destruction. "You lied," she whispered, the words carrying a devastating finality. "Every single day of our lives, you made us believe she didn't want us, when all along you were running from the consequences of your own crimes."
Arthur flinched as if physically struck. He slumped further against the counter, unable to defend himself against the damning evidence resting in his daughter's hands. Toby, sensing the emotional devastation washing over his sister, reached out and gently tugged on the sleeve of her beige hoodie, his own fear momentarily eclipsed by confusion. Chloe looked down at the young boy, her heart shattering anew. She had to protect him not just from Arthur’s unpredictable rages, but from the brutal reality that their entire existence was built on a foundation of unforgivable deceit.
