BLUE SHIELD ON THE ASPHALT / Chapter 4 / 14

Chapter 4

Back at the Grand Galleria, the heavy tension had shifted from physical violence to a tense, suffocating standoff. Lieutenant Vance had finally ordered the tactical unit to step back, though they maintained a rigid perimeter, effectively trapping Maya and the two arresting officers in a human-made bubble away from the frightened shoppers. Officer Miller stood rigidly beside a concrete planter, sweating profusely, while Jenkins nervously tapped his fingers against his duty belt, refusing to meet Maya’s penetrating gaze.

A sleek black departmental SUV screeched to a halt near the sliding glass exit doors, its emergency lights flashing silent red and blue strokes across the polished marble floor. Internal Affairs Director Marcus Vance stepped out, flanked by two plainclothes investigators. Marcus smoothed down the lapels of his charcoal suit, wearing an expression designed to project calm reassurance, though his jaw muscles twitched with suppressed agitation.

"Alright, clear the immediate area," Marcus ordered the remaining patrol officers, his voice sharp and authoritative. He walked directly toward Maya, stopping two paces away. He glanced down at the steel cuffs biting into her wrists. "Take those off her right now. What in the hell is wrong with you people?"

Officer Jenkins fumbled hurriedly with the brass key, unlocking the handcuffs with a frantic click. Maya rubbed her raw wrists, wincing slightly as blood flow returned to her fingers. She did not speak immediately. She reached down, retrieved her brown shoulder bag from the bench where it had been tossed, and unzipped it with deliberate slowness. She pulled out her official leather shield wallet, flipped it open, and held it directly in front of Marcus’s face.

"Captain Maya Vance, shield four-zero-eight," she stated, her voice unnervingly quiet. "I was lawfully present, minding my own business, when your patrol officers initiated an unwarranted physical assault, handcuffed me without probable cause, and escalated a non-existent threat with an unauthorized tactical deployment."

Marcus held up a placating hand, offering a practiced, diplomatic smile that failed to reach his cold eyes. "Maya, let's not air department laundry in the middle of a shopping center. We can head back to Central, sit down in my office, and draft an immediate remediation report. We'll handle the disciplinary actions internally, quietly, and fairly."

"Quietly?" Maya’s laughter was short, dry, and devoid of humor. "You want to sweep an unprovoked civil rights violation under the rug because my face is currently trending nationally on every news channel? Not this time, Marcus. I want every single dispatch log, every radio transmission, and every body-cam file from Miller, Jenkins, and Lieutenant Vance preserved under strict chain of custody before the end of this hour."

Marcus’s smile vanished completely. The mask of polite bureaucracy slipped away, revealing the hardened operative beneath. "Be careful, Maya. Pushing a war against your own command structure rarely ends with a promotion."
