Chapter 2

The arrival of the tactical unit transformed the chaotic mall corridor into a zone of absolute tension. Heavy boots echoed against the polished marble floor as half a dozen heavily armored men formed a defensive perimeter. Their black helmets and dark tactical gear swallowed the mall's bright ambient light, casting long, menacing shadows across the terrified civilian onlookers. Reflexively, civilians scattered backward, dropping shopping bags and pressing themselves against storefront glass windows, their phones still recording every single second of the unfolding disaster.

Captain Maya Vance stood firmly in the center of the semicircle, the cold steel handcuffs biting relentlessly into her wrists. Despite the terrifying presence of assault rifles pointed mere yards away from her chest, her expression remained a mask of controlled fury. She recognized the tactical commander instantly. It was Lieutenant Vance—no relation, though the shared surname felt like a cruel cosmic joke—a career bureaucrat who specialized in aggressive flash-deployments to mask his own administrative incompetence.

Lieutenant Vance marched through the formation, his face slick with sweat beneath the brim of his helmet. He glanced briefly at Miller and Jenkins, who looked suddenly unsure of themselves as they realized the magnitude of their reckless mistake. Miller released his grip on Maya’s arm, stepping back half a pace, though he kept his hand hovering near his holstered service weapon as if preparing for a sudden physical retaliation that would never come.

"Hold your fire! Lower those barrels!" Maya commanded, her voice cutting through the ambient hum of the electronics stores with absolute, unquestionable authority.

Lieutenant Vance stared at her, his eyes darting from her casual attire—the black crop top and white shorts—down to her cuffed wrists, and finally toward the brown shoulder bag resting abandoned on a nearby bench. A flicker of recognition crossed his weathered face, quickly replaced by a stubborn, defensive sneer. He had built his entire career on never admitting fault in front of his subordinates, and today was not going to be the exception to that unyielding rule.

"We received a call about an armed and aggressive suspect matching this exact description in the luxury corridor," Lieutenant Vance lied smoothly, his voice devoid of any genuine conviction. "Secure the prisoner and clear the concourse. Let's move."

"Check my bag, Lieutenant," Maya said, her tone dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "Open the brown leather compartment. My credentials, my badge, and my active command assignment orders are inside. Do it right now, before your career implodes in front of fifty civilian cameras."

The tactical officers exchanged uneasy glances beneath their tinted visors. The rifles wavered slightly, the implicit trust in their commander beginning to fracture under the weight of Maya's unyielding composure.
