Chapter 1

The air inside the Metropolis Grand Galleria hummed with the sterile, ambient drone of air conditioning and the muffled chatter of midday shoppers. It was supposed to be a routine Tuesday afternoon errand, a brief respite from administrative paperwork for Captain Maya Vance. Dressed casually in a black short-sleeve crop top, white shorts, and pristine white sneakers, Maya carried only her brown shoulder bag containing her wallet, keys, and, most importantly, her official shield. That shield was supposed to protect her dignity, but today it felt like a heavy anchor dragging her into a sudden, chaotic undertow.
Without warning, two uniformed patrol officers had intercepted her near the central fountain. Officer Miller, a veteran with a perpetually exhausted expression, and his younger, high-strung partner, Officer Jenkins, had moved in with an aggressive swiftness born of profiling rather than probable cause. Miller’s heavy hand clamped down ruthlessly around Maya’s bare upper arm, his fingers digging into her skin.
"Quit fighting, you people always make a simple arrest harder than it has to be," Miller barked, his voice cutting through the ambient mall noise like a jagged blade.
Maya’s pulse spiked, but years of rigorous command training kept her facial micro-expressions tightly controlled. She did not scream, nor did she flail. Instead, she planted her white sneakers firmly against the polished tile floor, anchoring her weight. The casual shoppers around them froze, instantly lifting glowing rectangular screens to record the escalating confrontation. The digital red recording dots blinked mockingly in the bright mall lighting.
Maya looked directly into Miller’s bloodshot, unyielding eyes. Her breathing remained deep and measured, a stark contrast to the rising panic of the onlookers.
"Take your hands off me and check my identification," Maya demanded, her voice carrying a calm, chilling authority that momentarily caused Miller’s grip to stutter.
Instead of complying, Jenkins lunged forward with a pair of steel handcuffs, clicking them roughly around her wrists before she could shift her stance. The cold metal bit sharply into her skin.
"I don't care who you think you are," Miller snapped, his face flushing crimson with frustrated authority as he shoved her slightly forward.
Refusing to cower, Maya straightened her posture, lifting her cuffed hands just enough to catch the light. She scanned the sea of smartphone cameras and the terrified faces of the civilian onlookers.

"Good. Keep going," Maya announced, her voice echoing clearly off the glass atrium. "I am an off-duty police captain."
Before the stunned silence could settle over the crowd, heavy boots thudded against the tile. A full line of tactical officers in heavy helmets, ballistic vests, and assault rifles materialized at the corridor's edge, their weapons raised.
