Chapter 6: Shadows on the Blacktop**

They left before dawn in Clara’s rusted Ford pickup. Jax loaded his vintage motorcycle into the bed, strapping it down with heavy chains, and put Toby in the passenger seat wrapped in a thick wool blanket. Clara handed Jax a thermos of black coffee and an envelope stuffed with fifty-dollar bills from the diner's safe.

"Don't you dare argue with me, Jax Morgan," Clara warned before he could speak. "That ain't for you. That's for Sarah’s boy. Get him out of this state. Cole won't forgive the beating you gave his boys, and the sheriff is on his payroll."

"I'll pay you back, Clara. Every dime," Jax said, gripping her hand tightly.

"Just keep the boy safe. That's the only currency I care about," she said, stepping back from the truck.

Jax hit the highway heading north toward Montana. The mountain passes were already gathering the first dusting of winter snow, painting the jagged peaks in pale bone-white. Through the rearview mirror, Jax watched the diner disappear into the morning mist.

For the first two hours, Toby remained completely silent, staring out the window at the endless expanse of barbed-wire fences and yellow prairie grass.

"You hungry, kid?" Jax asked, keeping one eye on the road and one on the mirror, watching for any tailing headlights.

"Mom used to make pancakes on Tuesdays," Toby murmured, his voice muffled by the blanket. "With blueberries."

"We'll find some pancakes at the next truck stop," Jax promised. "All the blueberries you can eat."
