Chapter 4: The Unopened Box**

"You're a damn fool, Jax," Clara said softly, setting the shotgun down on the counter. She grabbed a broom and began sweeping the glittering shards of glass. "Cole runs this entire county. You can't fight an entire charter with a kid tied to your back."

Jax walked toward the sink behind the counter, turning on the tap and rinsing the blood from his bruised knuckles. The cold water stung, grounding him in the harsh reality of the moment. "I ain't fighting them. We’re leaving."

"On that chopped-up Panhead?" Clara scoffed, looking at Toby. "The boy looks like a stiff breeze would carry him away. He needs a bed, warm stew, and a doctor. Look at his sneakers, Jax. They got holes through the soles."

Jax looked down. Toby stood quietly by the kitchen door, clutching a small, rusted tin box he had pulled from his canvas backpack.

"What's in the box, kid?" Jax asked, his voice softening just a fraction.

Toby took two hesitant steps forward and placed the box on the counter. The lid was held shut by a piece of electrical tape. "Mom told me never to open it unless you were with me. She said... she said it had the truth about why you left."

Jax stared at the tin box as if it were a primed explosive. Nine years ago, he had walked away because a rival gang had marked his name for execution. He had left Sarah in the dead of night, leaving an envelope of stolen cash, believing his absence would guarantee her safety. He had convinced himself that abandoning her was an act of noble sacrifice.

Now, standing in a ransacked diner with her orphaned son, that sacrifice looked like nothing more than cowardice.
