Chapter 5: What Sarah Left Behind**

With steady, cautious fingers, Jax peeled back the weathered black tape. The tin lid squeaked as he lifted it. Inside lay no money, no accusations, and no threats.
There were hospital discharge papers, a silver baptism medal, a pair of tiny knitted baby booties, and a small stack of unopened envelopes addressed to *Jax Morgan, Care of General Delivery, Sturgis, SD.* Every single one was stamped: *Return to Sender – Addressee Unknown.*
Sarah had spent years trying to reach him. She had tried to tell him he had a son.
Toby looked up, his voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator. "She said you were a hero who went away to protect us. She said you rode with angels."
Jax’s throat constricted until he could barely breathe. A sharp, burning sensation pressed against the back of his eyes. He had spent his life proud of his hardness, proud of being the man who never flinched when the bullets flew or the blades flashed. But those simple, innocent words carved through his armor like a blowtorch through sheet metal.
"She lied to you, Toby," Jax whispered honestly, dropping to one knee so his eyes were level with the boy's. "I ain't no hero. I was just a coward running from my own shadow."
Toby tilted his head, his hazel eyes searching Jax's weathered, scarred face. "Mom never lied. She just said you were lost, and I had to be the map."
