Chapter 9 - Wrath in the Rain

The rain came down in sheets, instantly plastering Min-hyuk’s dark hair against his forehead and washing the scarlet stains across the asphalt into pink ribbons. Chairman Song scrambled across the wet pavement, his silver revolver knocked three feet away, landing in the gutter.

Min-hyuk rose slowly, clutching his bleeding side, his breath coming in ragged, steaming gasps. The pain in his ribs was incandescent, but it was nothing compared to the ten-year inferno of betrayal burning through his chest. Every favor he had done for Song, every skull he had cracked, every soul he had sold—it had all been in service to his brother’s murderer.

Song reached desperately for the fallen weapon, his fingers clawing at the muddy curb. Min-hyuk’s heavy boot slammed down onto Song’s wrist, pinning it to the concrete until bones ground together under the weight.

"Mercy, Min-hyuk!" Song gasped, spitting rain and blood. "I made you! Everything you are, you owe to me!"

"I owe you a cremation," Min-hyuk said coldly.

He didn't draw a gun. He knelt down, gripping Song by the throat with his bare hands, his thumbs sinking into the carotid arteries. Song thrashed like a landed fish, his eyes bulging as the rain beat violently against his face. The old mobster scratched at Min-hyuk’s wrists, drawing deep gouges of blood, but Min-hyuk’s grip was iron forged in ten years of repressed vengeance.

Inside the clinic, a thunderous crash signaled that The Butcher had managed to haul his massive frame back to his feet despite the ruined tendon. A heavy, iron pipe shattered the remaining frame of the clinic window, and the towering brute limped into the alley, his eyes burning with monstrous intent as he searched for the child who had crippled him.

Su-ah stood frozen on the clinic threshold, the bloodied scalpel dangling from her fingers, the torrential rain instantly drenching her oversized beige shirt.

The Butcher locked eyes with her, raising the iron pipe high above his head with a guttural roar.

Min-hyuk saw the reflection in the puddle beneath him. Without hesitation, he released Song's choking throat, drew his sidearm from his hip, and fired three consecutive rounds through his own suit jacket, directly over his shoulder.

The Butcher halted mid-stride, three dark holes blossoming across his chest, before toppling face-first into the flooded gutter.

Min-hyuk turned back to Chairman Song, who was crawling toward an alleyway, gasping for breath. But as Min-hyuk took a step forward, a heavy siren wailed in the distance. Blue and red lights reflected against the rain clouds above the harbor.
