Chapter 11 - The Awakening

The cabin was sparsely furnished, smelling of dry pine needles, woodsmoke, and damp earth. A cast-iron stove crackled in the center of the main room, radiating a comforting warmth that slowly thawed the bone-deep chill from Su-ah’s limbs.

Her mother, Eun-ji, lay propped up on a thick mattress laid directly on the wooden floor. She looked fragile as porcelain, her skin translucent, but the deathly grey pallor had vanished, replaced by the faint flush of returning life. The two infant boys lay beside her, asleep with bellies full of warm milk, their tiny chest movements even and calm.

Su-ah knelt beside the mattress, holding her mother's weak, trembling hand against her cheek. She hadn't left that spot for four hours.

"He looks just like his brother," Eun-ji whispered, her voice barely audible over the crackling wood stove. Her eyes were fixed on Min-hyuk, who sat across the room at a rough wooden table, sewing the bullet wound in his ribs shut with fishing line and a curved needle, refusing any pain medication.

Min-hyuk pulled the knot tight, cutting the line with his teeth. He didn't look up. "Dae-hyun was taller. And he smiled too much."

"He talked about you every single day," Eun-ji said, a single tear cutting through the dust on her cheek. "Even when we were hiding in the basement, freezing in the dark... he said if anything ever happened to him, his little brother would become the fire that burned our enemies away."

Min-hyuk’s hand froze over the wound. He looked at the woman—the sister-in-law he had never met, who had survived a decade of subterranean hell to keep Dae-hyun’s blood alive.

"I wasn't a fire," Min-hyuk said quietly, looking down at his scarred palms. "I was Song's attack dog. I built the empire that hunted you."

"And yet, you are the one who pulled us from the flood," she replied softly. "Su-ah told me what happened. She said you shielded her."

Su-ah looked up, her hazel eyes meeting Min-hyuk’s. "You promised you’d make me work off the debt."

Min-hyuk stood up, buttoning a clean woolen shirt he had found in the cabin’s supplies. "I intend to collect every cent, kid. But first, we have to make sure there’s a world left for you to grow up in."

Dr. Han suddenly rushed into the cabin from the porch, holding an encrypted satellite radio. His eyes were wide with panic. "Min-hyuk. Turn on the maritime feed. Something catastrophic is happening at the docks."
