Chapter 8: The Testimony of Truth

Two weeks later, the custody hearing began in the county courthouse. The room was packed with reporters, city officials, and members of high society. Evelyn sat at the front table, flanked by three high-priced corporate attorneys, looking immaculate in a dark navy suit.
Victor sat on the opposite side with Arthur. He wore a simple, tailored black suit, his beard neatly trimmed, his gaze steady and calm.
Evelyn’s lawyer took the podium first, painting a picture of Victor as an unstable man with a history of conflict, living a nomadic life without the resources to provide a proper aristocratic education for Lily.
When it was Arthur’s turn, he didn't present financial statements or corporate affidavits. He walked to the center of the courtroom carrying a small audio player and a certified ledger from the bank.
"Your Honor," Arthur addressed the judge. "The petitioner claims my client is unfit due to financial instability. I present to the court the audit of the Vance Family Trust, showing that over three million dollars earned by my client was systematically funneled away from his daughter by Evelyn Vance."
Murmurs filled the gallery. Evelyn’s knuckles turned white against her handbag.

"Furthermore," Arthur continued, "we offer into evidence the written statements of Catherine Vance, recovered from the petitioner's private residence, documenting six years of blackmail, harassment, and emotional abuse."
Arthur pressed play on the recorder. A soft, clear voice filled the silent courtroom—an audio letter Catherine had recorded on a small cassette tape during her final months in Willow Creek.
