Chapter 13: The Healing Garden

Spring returned to Willow Creek, bringing with it a vibrant bloom of wildflowers across the valley. Victor spent his weekends restoring the garden behind the cottage—the same garden Catherine had planted years ago.

Together with Lily, he planted rows of lavender, white roses, and sweet peas. As they worked the soil, Victor told Lily stories about her mother—not about the tragedy or the legal battles, but about her laughter, her love for books, and her kind heart.

One evening, Arthur drove up from the city to visit. He wore casual clothes instead of his usual three-piece suit, carrying a wooden box of legal documents.

"Evelyn’s criminal trial concluded yesterday," Arthur said as they sat on the porch, watching the sun dip behind the mountains. "She received probation and heavy restitution orders due to her age and failing health. The family estate is being liquidated to pay off creditors and trust funds."

"How is she?" Victor asked quietly.

"She’s living in a private care home in the suburbs," Arthur replied. "Quietly. No visitors, except for her legal team."

Victor looked out over the blooming garden. He felt no triumph, only a quiet wish that his mother had realized the value of love before it was too late.
