Chapter 9: The Break

The sudden, sharp pain in her wrist sparked a fierce wave of adrenaline through Claire’s veins. Instead of pulling back, she slammed her heel down hard onto the polished leather of Julian’s expensive dress shoe, twisting her weight into the impact with every ounce of frustration she had harbored over seven years of emotional subjugation.

Julian winced, letting out a sharp grunt of pain as his grip instantly slackened. It was all the opening Claire needed. She wrenched her arm free, spun around the corner of the cedar shelving, and bolted out of the walk-in closet before he could recover his balance.

"Claire, damn it, stop!" Julian shouted, his footsteps thudding heavily against the hardwood floor of the master bedroom as he pursued her down the length of the suite.

She didn't look back. She cleared the threshold of the bedroom and launched herself down the sweeping staircase, her sensible shoes gripping the wooden treads as she descended in a blur of motion. In the foyer, the heavy double wooden front doors beckoned like a portal to another world. Behind her, Julian’s rapid footsteps echoed down the stairs, but he was slowed by the bulky cut of his tailored suit and the sharp sting of his bruised foot.

Claire slammed her shoulder against the brass panic bar of the front door, sending the heavy wood swinging wide open into the bright morning sunlight. She didn't bother trying to reach the rented sedan parked in the driveway; instead, she sprinted across the manicured lawn toward the thick line of evergreen trees bordering the estate’s perimeter fence, knowing her best chance at survival lay in the dense suburban neighborhoods beyond the private gates.

Behind her, Julian burst out onto the front porch, panting heavily, his face flushed with anger and exertion. "You can't hide, Claire!" he roared across the emerald lawn, his voice carrying over the quiet suburban street like a physical threat. "They will find you before the sun goes down!"

Claire ducked beneath the low-hanging branches of the spruce trees, tearing her blouse slightly on a stray twig as she squeezed through a gap in the wrought-iron perimeter fence into the public sidewalk beyond. Her breath came in ragged gasps, her lungs burning with the cold autumn air, but she kept moving, forcing her legs to pump faster as she heard the distant, muffled sound of a car engine revving up inside the estate grounds. She had the flash drive in her pocket—the digital key to Julian’s entire criminal enterprise—and as long as she reached a secure phone before he cut off her communications, his gilded cage was about to collapse around him for good.
