Chapter 8: Caught in the Act

Julian stood in the doorway of the walk-in closet, his dark suit jacket unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened at the collar. He did not look surprised; instead, a cold, predatory smile played at the corners of his mouth as he leaned casually against the doorframe, blocking the only exit from the small space.

"I knew you were smart, Claire, but I always underestimated your morbid curiosity," Julian said, his voice smooth, low, and devoid of any warmth. He stepped into the closet, the small room instantly feeling airless and claustrophobic under his imposing physical presence. "Most women would have taken the settlement, grabbed their kid, and run as far away as humanly possible without looking back."

Claire stood up slowly from the floor, keeping her body positioned between Julian and the open strongbox, her mind racing through every possible escape route. "You're running a massive fraud, Julian," she said, her voice remarkably steady despite the terror tightening her throat. "Every single document here proves you've been looting the municipal pension funds for years. That’s why you were so desperate to get me out of the house—not because of Elena, but because you knew I’d eventually find this vault."

Julian chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that lacked any real mirth. He took another step forward, closing the distance between them until Claire could smell the expensive sandalwood of his cologne. "Fraud is such an ugly word, my dear. In my line of work, we call it aggressive capital reallocation," he said smoothly. "And as for the documents... well, who do you think a jury is going to believe? A bitter, penniless ex-wife attempting to smear a respected financial executive during a messy divorce, or a pillar of the community with the state senator on speed dial?"

"The federal investigators won't care about your social standing once they see these bank routing numbers," Claire retorted, her eyes locked onto his with fierce determination. She reached down quickly, her fingers closing around the sleek flash drive resting in the foam cutout, slipping it into the deep pocket of her black skirt before Julian could react.

Julian’s eyes narrowed instantly, the casual facade dropping away to reveal the ruthless pragmatism that had built his empire. He lunged forward with surprising speed, his hand shooting out to grab her wrist before she could pull away. "Give it back, Claire," he hissed, his grip tightening like a steel vice around her forearm, sending a sharp wave of pain shooting up her arm. "You have no idea what you're meddling in. These people don't play by civil court rules. If you walk out of this house with that drive, you aren't just destroying me—you’re signing your own death warrant."
