Chapter 11: The Meet

The rain began to fall in a steady, miserable drizzle by late afternoon, turning the cobblestone streets of the industrial harbor district into slick mirrors reflecting the neon lights of closed warehouses. Claire sat in the corner booth of a quiet maritime pub called The Anchor’s End, nursing a lukewarm glass of ginger ale while her eyes scanned the dimly lit room. The pub was nearly empty, save for a lone bartender wiping down the wooden counter with a damp rag and an old sea captain dozing in a booth near the wood-burning stove.
The brass bell above the front door chimed softly as a tall man in a dark trench coat stepped in, shaking the rainwater from his wide-brimmed hat before scanning the room with sharp, intelligent eyes. Marcus Vance looked older than Claire remembered—his hair was heavily threaded with gray around the temples, and deep lines of fatigue etched the corners of his mouth—but his posture remained upright and intensely focused.
He spotted her in the back booth, walked over without hesitation, and slid onto the bench opposite her, pulling off his leather gloves and tossing them onto the table.
"You sound like you’ve had a hell of a twenty-four hours, Claire," Marcus said quietly, keeping his voice low as he leaned forward across the scarred wood of the table. "When you called from a burner phone earlier, I figured you were either running for your life or selling me a ghost story."
Claire reached into her coat pocket, pulled out the black flash drive, and slid it across the table between them. "It’s no ghost story, Marcus. That little piece of plastic contains every wire transfer, shell company ledger, and signed political payoff Julian used to loot twenty million dollars from the Bridgeport municipal pension fund over the past four years."
Marcus stared at the flash drive for a long moment before picking it up between his thumb and forefinger, examining it like a rare artifact. "If this is genuine, Vanguard Pacific is going down in flames, and half the city council is going down with them," he murmured, his eyes narrowing with journalistic adrenaline. "Where did you get this?"
"Right out of Julian’s private wall safe in his master closet," Claire replied grimly, taking a slow sip of her ginger ale. "He caught me before I could leave, Marcus. He knows I have it. And he made it very clear that his associates don't play by civil court rules."

Marcus slipped the drive into the interior pocket of his trench coat, buttoning it securely before looking back at her with a mix of deep admiration and stark warning. "Federal marshals are the only people who can guarantee your safety now, Claire. We can't trust the local authorities. I have a contact at the U.S. Attorney’s office in Manhattan who has been trying to build a racketeering case against Vanguard for over a year. If we walk into his office tomorrow morning with these files, we bypass the local corruption entirely. But until then... you and Leo cannot go back to that harbor apartment."
