Chapter 4: The Sound of Silence

Nightfall over the harbor brought a heavy, restless quiet that settled deep into the marrow of the old brick building. Claire lay awake on a narrow folding cot in the living room, listening to the rhythmic creak of the floorboards and the distant rumble of late-night traffic on the coastal highway. In the next room, Leo breathed in soft, even rhythms, fast asleep after helping her unpack their meager belongings and eating a supper of scrambled eggs and toast at the small wooden kitchen island. The silence of the apartment was entirely different from the heavy, suffocating silence of the Connecticut mansion; here, it was the silence of potential, of blank pages and unwritten tomorrows, but it was also laced with the haunting ghost of uncertainty.

Her phone buzzed once against the wooden tabletop, a sharp, metallic vibration that sounded like a gunshot in the stillness of the room. Claire sat up instantly, her heart slamming against her ribs as she stared at the glowing screen across the dark room. She did not move for several long seconds, letting the light fade back into blackness before it illuminated a second time with a silent text notification.

Unknown Number: We need to talk about the addendum.

Claire stared at the words, her breath catching in her throat. The settlement agreement had been finalized and signed on the clipboard under the watchful eyes of Julian’s high-priced attorney; there was no addendum, no loose end left untied—or so she had been led to believe. She swung her legs over the side of the cot, her bare feet touching the cold hardwood, and walked slowly toward the kitchen island. Her fingers hovered over the glass screen for a moment before she swiped it open, her pulse roaring in her ears like the ocean tide outside.

Claire: The agreement is final. We have nothing left to discuss.

Almost instantly, the screen lit up again, this time with an incoming call from a blocked number. She let it ring, watching the digital numbers pulse in the darkness until the automated voicemail picked up with a muted click. A few seconds later, a visual voicemail transcription popped up on the screen, typed out by the carrier’s software with eerie precision.

Julian’s voice (transcribed): "You missed a page, Claire. Elena wants the nursery cleared out by Friday, but there’s something behind the floorboards in the walk-in closet that belongs to you. If you don't come back for it, I burn it."

Claire stared at the glowing letters, her mind racing backward through seven years of locked doors, hidden ledgers, and the quiet secrets Julian had kept buried in the dark corners of their suffocating life.
