Chapter 3: The Terrace Exit

The weight of the ballroom air felt suffocating as Julian and Clara navigated the sea of tailored suits and silk evening gowns toward the glass terrace doors. Lily walked between them, her small hand firmly gripped in Clara’s, her beige dress brushing softly against the polished floor. Behind them, the murmurs of the guests had resumed at a fever pitch, speculative whispers bouncing off the ornate plaster molding. Julian kept his head high, adjusting his black bow tie with a hand that barely trembled, though his mind raced through the implications of Vance’s trap.

Arthur Vance stood just outside on the stone balcony, lit by the pale glow of a three-quarter moon and the distant neon lights of the city skyline. He held a crystal flute of champagne, swirling the golden liquid with casual indifference. As the glass door slid open with a faint hiss, Vance turned, his thin lips curling into a polite, practiced smile that didn't reach his small, calculating eyes.

"Julian. Clara. A magnificent party, wouldn't you say? Though perhaps a bit... dramatic near the end," Vance said, his voice smooth and unhurried.

Julian took a step forward, the smartphone heavy in his pocket. The chill of the autumn night air hit his face, but he felt only a burning anger beneath his skin. "Cut the act, Arthur. You used a six-year-old child to carry your encrypted burner. You slipped it into her coat while you pretended to bump into me by the chocolate fountain."

Vance took a slow sip of his champagne, his gaze drifting briefly down to Lily before returning to Julian’s face. "Prove it. The Vachel security system is notoriously unreliable. By the time the night manager wakes up from his scotch-induced nap, the loop will have overwritten itself. Besides, who are the police going to believe? A respected senior partner at a top-tier investment firm, or a man who throws floral arrangements across a ballroom floor in a jealous rage?"

Clara stepped up beside Julian, her expression freezing Vance’s smug smile in place. "You underestimate what security cameras capture when they are wired into a private municipal feed, Arthur. The Vachel estate was upgraded last month. The footage goes straight to the cloud. Unedited. Undeletable."

Vance’s hand paused inches from his mouth. The glass trembled ever so slightly, a single drop of champagne spilling over the rim and hitting the stone patio. For a fraction of a second, the mask slipped, revealing the raw panic of a man who had miscalculated his risk exposure. But Vance recovered quickly, smoothing his lapels with practiced grace.

"You're bluffing," Vance whispered, though his eyes darted toward the indoor security dome visible through the glass door.
