Chapter 2: Whispers in the Parquet

The silence in the Vachel ballroom stretched, heavy and jagged, as the guests collectively took a half-step backward from the center of the room. Julian remained frozen, his gaze locked on the blinking red dot of the ceiling-mounted dome camera. The metal floral stand lay at his feet like a fallen monolith, surrounded by crushed white orchids and shimmering droplets of water that reflected the brilliant light of the crystal chandeliers. Clara did not rush forward to comfort Lily, nor did she raise her voice. Her composure was an impenetrable fortress, built on years of navigating high-society scandals and corporate double-dealing.

"We need to leave," Clara murmured, her voice carrying a quiet authority that forced Julian to look away from the ceiling. "Before security pulls the tape and locks the perimeter."

Julian shook his head slightly, the short brown hair brushing the collar of his black velvet tuxedo jacket. His stubble seemed darker under the harsh glare of the recessed lighting. "If we leave now, it looks like guilt," he said, his tone low and strained. "The camera already has it, Clara. Every frame. Me losing my temper, throwing the stand, cornering Lily."

"You cornered a child over a corporate phone," Clara replied, her dark eyes flashing with controlled fury. "And you did it publicly because you were desperate. But ask yourself, Julian—who slipped that phone into her pocket in the first place? It wasn't you, and it certainly wasn't Lily."

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He stared at the smartphone glowing faintly in his hand. The screen had lit up with a missed notification, displaying an encrypted alphanumeric string rather than a standard contact name. It was a burner device, the kind used by corporate insiders to pass sensitive acquisition data without leaving a traditional digital footprint. He remembered bumping into Arthur Vance near the dessert table just ten minutes before the incident. Vance had been sweating profusely, adjusting his silk tie, muttering something about a hostile takeover bid falling through.

Beside Clara, little Lily tugged gently on the burgundy fabric of her mother's gown. "Mommy, my shoes are wet," the little girl whispered, her voice innocent and entirely detached from the political storm swirling around them.

Clara knelt, smoothing down Lily's blonde hair and adjusting the slipping white bow. "I know, sweetheart. Just hold my hand and don't let go." She stood back up, looking squarely at Julian. "Arthur Vance is still in the room. He’s standing by the terrace doors, watching every move we make. He’s the one who planted it, isn't he?"

Julian felt a cold realization wash over him. Vance hadn't just used Lily as a mule; he had used Julian’s known temper as the catalyst to create a public distraction. And the security camera had captured the entire setup from a bird’s-eye view.
