Two weeks after the gala, the interior of the Sterling-Vance Financial Tower felt fundamentally different. The culture of hyper-competitive secrecy that Arthur Vance had cultivated for over a decade was being systematically dismantled from the inside out. As head of the new internal ethics committee, Julian instituted open-door policy audits, encrypted anonymous whistleblowing channels, and mandatory transparency workshops for all senior executives.
Sitting in his office on a crisp Tuesday morning, Julian reviewed the preliminary draft of the quarterly audit report. There were no hidden shell accounts, no suspicious data transfers, and no backdoor leverage. The numbers were clean, honest, and verifiable.
His administrative assistant, a sharp young man named Marcus Jr., knocked softly on the open door and stepped inside holding a leather-bound folder.
"Mr. Sterling—the senior partner downstairs—asked me to deliver the final federal deposition summaries regarding the Vance asset seizure," Marcus said, placing the folder on the desk. "The SEC officially closed the inquiry this morning with zero punitive fines against our firm."
Julian closed the audit report and looked up. "Good. Make sure copies are distributed to every department head before the afternoon briefing. I want complete clarity on where every dollar of restructuring capital is allocated."
"Will do, sir," Marcus replied, hesitating slightly before adding, "By the way, the board room is prepped for the Friday charity gala planning committee. Mrs. Sterling confirmed she's attending with her niece."

As the door clicked shut, Julian leaned back in his leather executive chair, looking out over the panoramic view of the New York skyline. He felt grounded, connected to something real and enduring.
