Chapter 6 - The Sound Behind the Steel

The heavy thud reverberated through the concrete floor, vibrating straight up through the soles of Marcus’s shoes. A second, louder crash followed immediately, accompanied by the metallic rattle of the door frame shifting under immense physical force.

Marcus staggered backward, his hands flying up to push Elena away as he stared in horror at the steel barrier. The low, guttural sound from the other side wasn't just a voice; it was an animalistic roar, desperate and enraged, echoing in the confined subterranean space like a nightmare made flesh.

“He’s awake,” Elena whispered, her face draining of the last remaining traces of color. She didn't look at Marcus; her gaze was fixed entirely on the keypad, her fingers twitching as if she were fighting an invisible urge to punch in the override code. “When he gets like this, the medication isn't enough. That’s why I had to restrict everything upstairs. Every resource, every bit of focus... it all has to go toward keeping this door secure.”

“You’ve been starving our children to feed a fugitive?” Marcus yelled, his voice cracking with a rage so profound it momentarily eclipsed his fear. He grabbed Elena by the shoulders, shaking her slightly. “You’ve been locking Jordan and his sister in their rooms, throwing away their meals, turning our home into a prison camp, all to hide your fugitive brother in a hole under our garage?”

“He’s my blood!” Elena screamed back, breaking free from his grip with a surge of desperate strength. She shoved him hard against the damp concrete wall. “You have no idea what it’s like to lose everything, to watch someone you love tear themselves apart and have no one to help you! You were always at work! Always climbing your corporate ladder while I was drowning in this house alone!”

Another massive crash rattled the steel door. The digital keypad flashed yellow, then red, emitting a series of high-pitched warning beeps that pierced the damp air.

System warning: Unauthorized proximity override.

Marcus ignored the pain in his shoulder where he had hit the wall. He stared at the keypad, his mind racing through the catastrophic fallout of this discovery. If David was down here, volatile, violent, and hidden by his wife for years, their entire lives were built on a ticking time bomb. The police, the neighbors, the school—if any of this came to light, they would all be destroyed.

“We are calling the authorities right now,” Marcus said, his voice hard, resolute, as he reached into the pocket of his trousers for his cell phone. “This ends tonight, Elena. No more secrets, no more locks.”

Elena’s eyes widened in sheer terror. She lunged forward, her hands intercepting his before he could pull the phone from his pocket, her fingernails digging sharply into his wrist.

“If you call the police,” Elena hissed, her voice trembling with a deadly earnestness, “they won't just take David. They’ll look at the children’s rooms. They’ll see the locks, the deprivation, the environment I created. They’ll take Jordan and his sister away from us forever. And look at the keypad, Marcus—he’s already bypassed the primary deadbolt.”
