Chapter 14 - The Breach

The heavy thud of tactical boots echoed up the staircase like rolling thunder, accompanied by the sharp, metallic clicks of automatic weapons being unholstered and safety catches snapping off. The house was no longer a private sanctuary or a hidden prison; it was a contested zone, overrun by forces that operated with absolute, cold efficiency.
“Clear the landing! Move, move, move!” a gruff voice commanded from the bottom of the stairs, the sound bouncing off the hallway walls with terrifying clarity.
Marcus didn't hesitate. He scooped Jordan up into his other free arm, carrying both of his young children against his chest as he lunged toward the bedroom window where David stood perched on the sill. The cool night air rushed into the room, smelling of rain and impending chaos.
“Go!” David urged, stepping aside to clear the opening, his gaunt face illuminated by the flashing red and blue strobes from the front driveway. “The flat roof of the garage is right below this window. Drop down onto the shingles, slide to the back edge, and drop into the tall grass. The drainage ditch leads straight to the treeline.”
“What about you?” Marcus asked, pausing for a fraction of a second, torn between lingering resentment and the raw instinct of survival.
“My road ends here,” David said with a faint, grim smile that reached his eyes for the first time. He turned away, facing the open bedroom door as the heavy footsteps reached the top of the stairs. “Go protect your family, Marcus. That’s something I never knew how to do.”
Before Marcus could reply, the bedroom door was violently kicked inward, splintering the frame and sending wood chips flying across the carpet. Two tactical officers in full black body armor and helmets burst into the room, their assault rifles raised and laser sights painting a web of glowing red dots across the walls.
“Federal agents! Don’t move! Drop your weapons!” the lead officer shouted, his voice amplified by the tactical helmet comms.
Elena screamed, throwing her hands over her head as she slid to the floor beside the bed. David stood calmly with his hands raised, offering no resistance as the officers swarmed the room, shouting additional commands and sweeping their weapons across the space.

Marcus acted on pure adrenaline. With his children clutched tight in his arms, he swung his legs over the bedroom window sill and dropped blindly into the cool darkness toward the corrugated metal roof of the garage below.
