Chapter 15 - The Unlocked Horizon

The impact of landing on the corrugated metal roof sent a jarring shock up Marcus’s spine, but he kept his footing, absorbing the momentum as he tumbled forward onto the sloping shingles. Holding Jordan and his sister securely against his chest, he scrambled down the slick surface toward the rear edge of the garage.

Below them, the tall grass of the backyard swayed gently in the cool autumn breeze, illuminated faintly by the distant amber glow of a neighborhood streetlamp. Without looking back, Marcus pushed off the edge of the roof and dropped the final six feet into the soft earth below.

He hit the ground on his knees, absorbing the shock with his thighs before rolling onto his side to shield the children. Both kids were crying softly, but neither was injured.

“Are you guys okay?” Marcus whispered frantically, pulling them close as the distant sounds of shouting and heavy boots echoed from inside the main house.

“We’re okay, Dad,” Jordan sobbed quietly, burying his face in Marcus’s shoulder. “Can we go home now?”

Marcus looked up at the darkened silhouette of the house against the starry night sky. The life they had known—the illusion of perfection, the rigid control, the hidden secrets buried beneath the concrete—was gone forever, dismantled by the harsh light of truth. There would be months of investigations, legal battles, and painful emotional rebuilding ahead. But the locks were broken, the vault was open, and the house was finally empty of secrets.

“We’re going somewhere safe,” Marcus said, his voice steady and resolute as he stood up, lifting both children into his arms once more.

He turned away from the garage, stepping past the backyard fence and into the shadowed tree line of the drainage ditch that led away from the property. As they walked into the cool, open night, the distant sirens began to fade into the background, replaced by the quiet rustle of leaves and the steady, natural rhythm of their own breathing.

For the first time in years, the horizon stretched out before them without a single barrier in sight, vast and entirely unlatched.
