Chapter 10 - The Quiet Hallway

“Dad!” the little girl cried out, dropping the kitchen knife with a sharp clatter onto the tile floor as she ran across the room and threw her arms around his waist.

Marcus dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around her tightly, burying his face in her hair. She was shaking uncontrollably, her small body cold against his chest.

“Are you okay? Where is your brother?” Marcus asked, his voice shaking as he pulled back to look into her tear-stained face. “Where did Jordan go?”

“He came back from the basement, Dad,” she sobbed, pointing a trembling finger toward the dark hallway leading to the front door. “He said he heard mom calling him from the front porch. He opened the door, and then... and then someone pulled him outside.”

Marcus stood up slowly, picking up his daughter and holding her securely in one arm. His other hand searched frantically for his phone, remembering only then that he had left it down in the basement near the breaker panel. He couldn't call the police. He couldn't check the perimeter. He was completely cut off in a house that had suddenly transformed from a suburban home into a labyrinth of hidden terrors.

“Did you see who it was?” Marcus asked, stepping cautiously toward the kitchen entrance, his eyes scanning the dark hallway.

“It wasn't just mom,” the little girl whispered, burying her face in his shoulder. “There was a man with her. A tall man with wild hair. He looked like mom, but he smelled like the cellar.”

David.

The fugitive brother had not only escaped; he had infiltrated the main house, taking Jordan with him. And Elena was working with him, abandoning any pretense of protecting her family in favor of whatever desperate alliance they had forged underground.

Marcus stepped out of the kitchen into the hallway, his instincts screaming at him to flee, to take his daughter and run out the back door toward the neighbors' houses. But he couldn't leave Jordan behind. Not after everything.

As they reached the base of the front stairs, a soft sound caught Marcus’s attention. A faint metallic scraping noise coming from the second-floor landing.

He didn't hesitate. Balancing his daughter securely against his hip, Marcus began to ascend the stairs, his eyes fixed on the dim amber glow of the upstairs nightlight. The wooden steps groaned beneath his weight, the sound magnified in the suffocating silence of the house.

When he reached the top landing, the door to Jordan’s bedroom stood wide open. The heavy hasp on the exterior frame had been ripped completely out of the drywall, hanging by a single rusted screw.

Marcus stepped into the doorway, his breath catching in his throat as his eyes adjusted to the dim interior light.

Jordan was sitting in the center of the unmade bed, completely unharmed, but staring blankly at the far wall. Standing beside him, holding a small brass key, was Elena. And blocking the bedroom door behind Marcus, cutting off their only path of escape, was a tall, gaunt man with wild, unkempt hair and a terrifying, vacant smile.
