Chapter 9 - The Subterranean Archive

Rows upon rows of towering server racks hummed with suppressed energy, their tiny green and amber lights blinking like a constellation of digital stars in the underground darkness. The chamber was immense, stretching out further than the footprint of the house above. Dusty metal desks covered in old computer monitors, stacks of paper files, and reel-to-reel magnetic tapes littered the central workspace. It was a massive data center, frozen in time, completely disconnected from the outside world.
Clara’s light blue dress brushed against a discarded stack of manila folders as she walked cautiously between the server towers, her eyes wide with wonder and apprehension. Leo stayed close to her side, his hand brushing against a cold metallic railing that overlooked an even deeper drop into the facility.
“What is all this?” Leo muttered, his voice echoing softly in the vast, tomb-like silence of the archive.
Clara didn’t answer immediately. She stopped in front of a heavy, glowing computer terminal that had somehow remained active despite the facility-wide alarm. On the dusty cathode-ray screen, a single document window was open, featuring a bold header that sent a chill straight down her spine: PROJECT ASCENT: REPOPULATION AND RESOURCE ALLOCATION PROTOCOL.
She leaned closer, reading the glowing green text as her eyes tracked down the scrolling lines. Names, dates, and medical charts filled the screen—including detailed developmental logs for two specific subjects labeled Subject 401 and Subject 402.
“Leo… look at this,” Clara whispered, pointing a trembling finger at the screen.
Leo stepped up beside her, his breath hitching as he read the names listed under the subject profiles. *Subject 401: Clara.* Subject 402: Leo. Next to their names were birth dates, psychological evaluations, and a chilling status designation: COMPLIANCE TRIAL IN PROGRESS. ISOLATION VARIABLE ACTIVE.
They weren’t just children being raised in a strict household; they were test subjects in a long-term psychological experiment managed entirely by Arthur and Elena.
Suddenly, the heavy pneumatic doors at the opposite end of the massive archive hissed open, flooding the dark room with harsh, blinding white light. Footsteps echoed heavily across the concrete floor, followed by Arthur’s cold, authoritative voice cutting through the silence.

“I told you, Elena, they would eventually find the core archive.”
