Chapter 10 - Cornered in the Core

The blinding white light made Clara and Leo squint, their hands instinctively flying up to shield their eyes. As their vision adjusted, the imposing figure of Arthur stepped out from the glare, his blue button-down shirt wrinkled and his sleeves rolled up to his forearms. Right behind him walked Elena, her sharp white blazer dusted with soot from the utility room, her cold eyes locked onto the children with an expression of intense disappointment rather than surprise.

“You shouldn’t have come down here,” Elena said smoothly, her voice echoing in the cavernous server room with chilling calm. “Ignorance was a kindness, children. Knowing the truth only makes the cage feel smaller.”

Arthur stepped forward, his massive frame blocking any possible path back to the service ladder. His stern face was an unreadable mask of grim duty. He looked past Clara, his gaze falling upon the glowing terminal screen that still displayed their classified subject profiles.

“You saw the files,” Arthur stated flatly, not asking a question.

“You lied to us,” Leo shouted, stepping in front of Clara defensively, his fists clenched tightly at his sides. “We aren’t your family! We’re just part of some sick experiment!”

Arthur let out a slow, heavy sigh, the sound weary and laden with a strange, tragic weight. He stopped a few feet away from them, holding his hands up slightly to show he wasn’t going to use immediate force, though his path remained completely blocked.

“Everything we did, we did because the world above is gone,” Arthur said, his voice dropping into a solemn register. “The war, the fallout, the collapse of society—it wasn’t an accident. We were tasked with testing human resilience under controlled isolation. You were born for this, Leo. Clara was designed to lead the next phase.”

“That’s a lie!” Clara cried out, fresh tears spilling over her eyelashes as she clutched the heavy iron key fob in her pocket. “You locked us away because you wanted control! You starved us because you enjoyed watching us beg!”

Elena stepped around Arthur, her heels clicking aggressively against the concrete. Her expression hardened into pure venom. “Control is the only thing standing between survival and extinction, girl. And now that you’ve breached the core, we have no choice but to initiate the final reset protocol.”

Arthur’s eyes widened slightly at Elena’s words. He turned to her sharply, a sudden flash of panic crossing his stern features. “Elena, no. The reset clears the neural baseline. It will wipe their memories completely.”

Elena pulled a small, sleek digital remote from her white blazer pocket, her thumb resting directly over a glowing red activation button. “We have no other choice, Arthur. The outside network is pinging our coordinates. The experiment is over.”
