Chapter 7 - The Red Alarm

The shrill, rhythmic screech of the emergency alarm sliced through the air, painting the bedroom walls in pulsing strokes of crimson light. Arthur cursed under his breath, abandoning his interrogation of the children as he spun around and sprinted out of the room. His heavy footsteps thundered down the hallway toward the stairs. Clara and Leo exchanged a swift, desperate glance. The alarm meant only one thing: the breach in the lower level had triggered the facility's automated lockdown protocols, sealing all primary exits and exposing hidden corridors that had remained shut for decades.
“Come on!” Leo hissed, dropping the wooden stool and grabbing Clara’s hand.
They darted out of the bedroom, moving swiftly through the flashing red shadows of the corridor. The house felt entirely different now—less like a strict domestic home and more like an industrial bunker. As they reached the top of the grand staircase, they looked down into the main foyer. Arthur and Elena were already near the heavy front entrance, struggling with a massive digital keypad embedded directly into the reinforced steel door.
Elena was typing frantically, her sharp white blazer swaying with her rapid movements, while Arthur fired rapid orders into a wrist-mounted communicator.
“The secondary seal is failing!” Elena shouted over the deafening wail of the alarm. “The subterranean pressure is dropping! If we don’t manually override the bulkhead from the inner utility room, the entire structure will flood!”
From their vantage point on the landing, Clara pulled the heavy iron key fob from her pocket. She stared down at the keypad glowing in the foyer below, then looked toward the discreet side corridor leading to the utility annex—the very room Arthur had emerged from earlier that evening.
“Leo, look,” Clara whispered, pointing toward the unmonitored service door at the end of the upper gallery. “The alarm opened the second-floor service hatch. That’s where the cables lead.”

Leo nodded, his dark eyes wide with determination. Without hesitation, the two children ducked low, slipping away from the grand staircase and diving into the shadows of the narrow service corridor just as a heavy cloud of white smoke began to vent from the baseboards below.
