Chapter 6 - The Shadow on the Landing

The silhouette cast against the peeling wallpaper of the hallway belonged unmistakably to Arthur. His broad shoulders and stiff posture filled the narrow corridor as he approached their door with slow, terrifyingly deliberate steps. Clara and Leo scrambled backward into the darkness of their bedroom, their hearts pounding a frantic rhythm against their ribs. Leo grabbed the heavy wooden stool from their desk, holding it defensively in front of him, mimicking the stance he had taken earlier in the dining room, while Clara backed up against the cold windowpane.

The doorknob turned with a loud, metallic click. The door swung open, revealing Arthur standing in the threshold. The harsh corridor light cut across his face, highlighting the deep, angry lines carved into his forehead and the unrelenting sternness in his eyes.

“I know you are awake,” Arthur said, his deep voice slicing through the tense silence of the room. He stepped inside, his heavy boots crunching slightly on the bare floorboards. His gaze swept across the room, lingering for a fraction of a second on the pale, tear-stained face of the young girl in the light blue dress, before locking onto Leo, who was still holding the wooden stool like a shield.

“Put the stool down, Leo,” Arthur commanded quietly, though the threat underlying his tone was unmistakable. “You are only making things harder for yourselves.”

Leo’s arms trembled, but he refused to lower the stool. “Why are you locking us away? What is down there in the pantry? What are you hiding from us?”

Arthur stopped in his tracks. A flicker of something complex—perhaps regret, or perhaps pure cold calculation—crossed his face before it vanished behind his usual iron mask. He took another step forward, ignoring the boy’s defiance entirely.

“You do not understand the world outside these walls,” Arthur replied, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “Survival requires sacrifices. It requires walls, locks, and absolute control. And tonight, something has breached those walls. Something dangerous.”

Clara stepped out from the shadow of the window, her voice steady despite the lingering tears on her cheeks. “Or maybe you’re just afraid of what we’ll find out.”

Arthur’s eyes snapped toward her, narrowing sharply at her words. Before he could reach out and grab her wrist again, a piercing, mechanical alarm shrieked through the entire house, drowning out their conversation and plunging the hallway into flashing red emergency lights.
