Chapter 5 - The Drive’s Secret

The storm grew vicious, whiteouts obscuring the sharp turns of the winding mountain descent. Julian slammed the brakes, taking a sharp hairpin turn, causing the trailing SUV to overshoot and slide violently into a rocky embankment, bursting into flames against the pines.
One pursuer remained, relentless and creeping closer. Julian knew he couldn't outrun them on icy roads without four-wheel drive. He spotted a derelict logging trail on the right and whipped the wheel, cutting the headlights as the car plunged into the cover of dense evergreen trees.
The SUV zoomed past on the main road, its red taillights swallowed by the blinding flurry. Julian killed the engine. Total silence enveloped them, broken only by the rhythmic clicking of the cooling engine and the quiet breathing of the infant.
Maya exhaled a breath that fogged the frozen cabin. Julian reached over, gently peeling back the blanket to check on the boy. The child opened his eyes—wide, crystal gray, identical to Julian’s own. A tear tracked through the grime on Julian’s cheek.
"What did she name him?" Julian asked softly.
"Leo," Maya said quietly. "She called him Leo. Because she said he would need the heart of a lion to survive the world."
Julian plugged the bloodstained silver drive into the car’s console display. The dashboard screen flickered, bypassing basic encryption before unfolding reams of shipping manifests, offshore shell corporations, and wire transfers bearing a single digital signature: Arthur Sterling.
At the bottom of the root directory was a video file labeled simply: Julian_WatchThis.mp4.
