Chapter 1 - The Shattered Vow

The grand ballroom of the Ashford Estate was frozen in stifling silence. Crystal chandeliers swayed under a draft from open doors, casting harsh reflections across ivory marble. Julian looked at the wax-sealed envelope in his trembling fingers, then into the desperate eyes of the teenage girl before him. Melting snow dripped from her dark locks onto the off-white blanket swaddling the tiny child. Beside him, Clara gripped his sleeve, knuckles whitening against black wool.
"Julian... what is she talking about?" Clara’s voice cracked through the hush, piercing the elite assembly. "Tell me this is some horrific joke. Who is this girl?"
The girl shook her head softly, her lips purple from biting cold. "I’m Maya. My mother was Evelyn... Evelyn Vance. She told me never to look for you unless she didn't wake up." Maya's voice hitched, a sob catching deep in her throat. "She passed away three nights ago in a shelter downtown. She made me swear on her pulse that I’d put him in your arms."
Julian stopped breathing. Evelyn. A ghost from seven years ago, a name buried beneath wealth, duty, and social expectation. He felt the eyes of his father, patriarchal patriarch Arthur Sterling, burning from the front row. The murmurs began like a creeping tide, hushed scandals ripping through high society guests.
"Evelyn?" Clara stepped back, eyes wide, dropping Julian’s arm as if burned. "You said you barely remembered her. You said she was an old college acquaintance!"
"Clara, listen to me," Julian stammered, raising a hand, but his eyes were inexorably drawn back to the infant’s peaceful face. The child had a distinct sweep of dark hair and a tiny cleft on his chin—identical to Julian’s reflection in childhood portraits.
Maya extended the bundle, her arms trembling under exhaustion. "Take him, please. I walked four miles through the blizzard. I have nothing left."

Julian took an involuntary step forward, reaching out. Just as his fingers grazed the coarse blanket, a loud gunshot echoed outside the frosted double doors, shattering the winter night.
