Chapter 3 - The Cold Truth

Julian slammed the heavy steel fire door behind them, throwing the deadbolt. The echo of gunshots muffled into dull thuds. The dimly lit service tunnel smelled of damp concrete and heating oil. Panting heavily, Maya collapsed against the brick wall, clutching the sleeping infant.

"Julian, you brought death to our wedding!" Clara’s furious, trembling voice emerged from the shadows ahead. She had slipped down the private family stairwell, her pristine ivory train torn and dirtied. Behind her stood Arthur, his face dark with suppressed rage.

"Clara, get out of here," Julian said breathlessly, peeling off his tuxedo jacket and wrapping it around Maya’s shivering shoulders. "They aren't after us. They want the child."

"Then give them the damn child!" Arthur snapped, his cane striking the concrete. "Do you realize what this scandal will do to the Sterling-Ashford merger? Tomorrow morning, the press will eat us alive. An illegitimate child brought to the altar by a street urchin?"

"He is my son, Father!" Julian roared, surprising himself. The truth tore from his chest with violent conviction. "Look at him! Look at his face!"

Clara stared, disgust and betrayal warring across her features. "You knew. All these months you promised me devotion, you carried this ghost."

"I swear, I didn't know Evelyn was pregnant when she disappeared," Julian pleaded.

Maya fumbled with the edge of the blanket, pulling back a seam with numb fingers. She pulled out a small, metallic silver drive encrusted with dried blood. "This is why they killed her," Maya choked out. "She didn't die of cold. They hunted her down."

Before Julian could take the drive, the steel fire door shuddered under a massive hydraulic blast, hinges groaning as sparks flew.
