Chapter 13 - Runway Showdown

The private hangar at Oakwood Municipal Airfield was desolate, wind howling through the metal eaves. A twin-engine turboprop was being fueled on the tarmac, its propellers slowly churning as the flight crew conducted pre-flight checks.

Clara led Julian, Maya, and Leo through the VIP gate, flashing her pilot lounge credentials. "The pilot is loyal to me," she murmured. "He’ll fly us straight to Gary, Indiana. David Vance can meet us at the terminal."

They were twenty yards from the boarding stairs when high-intensity spotlights snapped on, blinding them completely.

Three luxury sedans slid onto the tarmac, blocking the hangar doors. Arthur Sterling stepped out of the center vehicle, flanked by armed men in formal overcoats. Arthur carried no weapon, but his eyes were cold as slate.

"Going on your honeymoon without me, Clara?" Arthur’s voice boomed over the whine of the engines.

Clara froze, stepping in front of Julian. "Arthur, let them go. This ends tonight. I’ve seen the manifests. I know what you are."

Arthur sighed, adjusting his fur-lined collar. "Clara, my dear, you are young and naive. Empires are built on compromise. That drive contains information that would bring down governors, generals, and banks. Do you honestly think I will let a half-breed bastard ruin fifty years of work?"

Julian handed Leo gently to Maya, whispering, "Get on the plane. Don't look back."

He walked forward, stepping out into the blinding beam of the spotlights. "Take me, Arthur. I have the drive. Let the girl and the baby fly."

May you like

Arthur smiled thinly. "You never understood power, Julian. Loose ends are untidy. Kill them all."
