Chapter 9: The Safe’s Secret

With Julian escorted away to the precinct in the back of a black-and-white cruiser, the atmosphere inside the sprawling library shifted from immediate crisis to a heavy, investigative quiet. Detective Marcus Vance remained behind, joined by Thomas and Elena, while a female social worker quietly entered the room to sit vigil near Clara, ensuring the child felt safe when she eventually woke up.

"Julian mentioned pharmacy logs and prescription records inside the wall safe," Detective Vance noted, walking over to the massive mahogany desk that dominated the far wall of the library. He ran a hand along the polished wood surface, searching for the hidden mechanism Julian had bragged about during his breakdown. "If those documents exist, they’ll substantiate the confession and give the district attorney an airtight case that won't rely solely on the testimony of a seven-year-old child."

Elena walked over to the desk, standing beside the detective. Her fingers grazed the corner of the blotter. "Julian always kept his private affairs meticulously organized," she said softly, watching the detective inspect the wood paneling beneath the towering bookshelves. "He was paranoid about losing control, which means he kept records of everything—even his crimes—as leverage against anyone who might cross him."

Detective Vance pressed a carved wooden medallion depicting a family crest on the side of the desk. With a smooth, mechanical click, a section of the oak paneling swung outward, revealing a heavy steel safe set deep into the brick wall behind it. The digital keypad on the front glowed with a faint blue light, waiting for a combination.

"Do you know the code, Elena?" Detective Vance asked, turning to look at her.

"Try Margaret’s birthday," Elena suggested without hesitation, her voice steady. "Julian was arrogant enough to use significant dates, believing his control over her life extended even into his security measures."

Detective Vance punched in the eight-digit sequence. The keypad flashed green, and the heavy steel door hissed as the internal vacuum seal broke, swinging open to reveal the dark interior. Inside sat neat stacks of manila folders, a leather-bound journal, and several transparent evidence bags containing prescription vials labeled with restricted cardiac medications.

Elena reached inside, pulling out the leather-bound journal. As she opened it to the first marked page, she recognized Margaret’s delicate handwriting, but interspersed among the personal entries were chilling medical notes, dosages, and dates written in Julian’s sharp, analytical hand—a clinical log of a slow, calculated execution.

"Here it is," Elena whispered, holding the journal out toward the detective. "The complete blueprint of the murder."
