Chapter 5: The Locked Library

The heavy oak doors of the estate’s private library closed with a dull, echoing thud, sealing away the murmuring crowd of socialites and shutting out the glaring lights of the grand hall. The library was a cavernous sanctuary of leather-bound volumes, mahogany shelves, and deep burgundy armchairs, smelling faintly of aged paper, pipe tobacco, and impending doom.
Julian paced rapidly near the grand fireplace, his grey suit jacket now unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened as sweat beaded on his forehead. "You are acting out of pure hysteria, Elena," he snapped, turning abruptly to face the small group gathered near the entrance. Aside from Elena and Clara, only Thomas Vance had been allowed to enter, acting as an uneasy mediator between the warring factions. "There is no evidence. Just the fevered nightmare of a traumatized child who watched her mother die of a weak heart."
"A weak heart that the coroner noted was remarkably free of natural deterioration," Elena fired back instantly, her tone razor-sharp. She guided Clara toward one of the leather armchairs, gently helping the little girl sit down and placing the white stuffed rabbit safely on her lap. Elena remained standing beside the chair, a protective guardian ready to strike. "I read the complete autopsy report this morning, Julian. The one that was quietly sealed before the final probate hearing. Traces of digitalis and heavy sedatives were found in Margaret’s system—quantities that a grieving wife doesn't simply prescribe for herself."
Thomas Vance gasped softly, his hand gripping the back of a nearby armchair for support. He turned his troubled, tear-rimmed eyes toward his brother. "Julian? Is that true? Did you tamper with her medication?"
"She was suffering, Thomas!" Julian shouted, his veneer completely shattering as he threw his hands into the air, the desperation in his voice echoing off the high bookshelves. "The doctors said she had months of agonizing pain ahead of her. She begged me to help her end it! It was an act of mercy, not murder!"
The confession hung in the freezing air of the library, heavy, undeniable, and utterly damning. Clara buried her face in the soft fur of her stuffed rabbit, letting out a small, heartbreaking whimper. Thomas closed his eyes, a heavy sigh escaping his lips as the last illusion of his brother’s innocence dissolved into ash.
Elena felt a cold tear finally escape her eye, tracking slowly down her cheek. She didn't yell or scream; her grief had transformed into a cold, relentless pursuit of justice. "Mercy?" Elena whispered, stepping toward Julian with a look that made the man instinctively back away toward the unlit fireplace. "You didn't grant her mercy, Julian. You removed the only witness to your financial greed. Margaret was about to sign the papers transferring her share of the estate back to the family trust. You killed her so you could keep everything."

Julian’s face drained of all color, his lips parting in silent horror as he realized the full extent of what Elena knew. The game was over, but the consequences were only just beginning.
