Chapter 8: Arrival of the Law

The sharp, rhythmic flashing of blue and red emergency lights painted abstract crimson and azure patterns across the towering Palladian windows of the estate library. The heavy oak doors finally clicked open, admitting two uniformed police officers accompanied by Detective Marcus Vance—a sharp-eyed, meticulous investigator distantly related to the family, known across the city for his incorruptible integrity and relentless pursuit of cold cases.
Detective Vance stepped into the room, his long trench coat swirling slightly around his ankles. He took in the scene with a practiced, sweeping glance: Thomas sitting with his head in his hands, Julian slumped defeatedly in the armchair, Elena standing like a protective statue, and little Clara sleeping soundly on the sofa with her white stuffed rabbit clutched against her chest.
"Evening, family," Detective Vance said, his voice level and professional, cutting through the heavy air of the library. He clipped a small notebook open in his hand, though his sharp eyes had already locked onto Julian. "I received a direct call from Chief Vance stating there’s been an admission regarding the circumstances of Margaret Vance’s passing three years ago. I need someone to tell me from the beginning, and I need every word to be the absolute truth."
Elena stepped forward, her black mourning dress swaying softly as she moved to intercept the detective before he could approach the sleeping child. "Julian already confessed to Thomas and me, Detective," Elena said firmly, keeping her voice controlled so as not to wake Clara. "He administered digitalis and heavy sedatives to my sister over a period of weeks to induce heart failure and seize control of her estate."
Detective Vance turned his gaze slowly from Elena to Julian. The detective’s expression didn't change; he had seen too many high-society tragedies masquerading as natural deaths to be easily shocked. He walked over to Julian, stopping just inches from the broken man.
"Is that correct, Julian?" Detective Vance asked quietly, tapping his pen against the plastic spine of his notebook. "Did you murder your wife?"
Julian slowly raised his head, his eyes red-rimmed and hollow. He looked at the police officer, then glanced briefly toward the sleeping child, before letting out a long, shuddering breath. "Yes," Julian whispered, the single syllable confirming every suspicion Elena had harbored since the tragic night of her sister’s death. "I did it. I have the pharmacy records, the prescription logs, everything locked in the wall safe behind the mahogany desk. Just... get me out of here."

The two uniformed officers stepped forward promptly, their movements efficient and restrained. They read Julian his rights in low, rhythmic tones that barely disturbed the quiet of the room as they placed cold steel handcuffs around his wrists. The man who had ruled this estate with calculated arrogance was hoisted to his feet, guided inexorably toward the heavy oak doors, leaving behind a legacy of ruin.
