Chapter 6: Shadows of Greed

The silence inside the sprawling mahogany-paneled library was broken only by the steady, heavy ticking of an antique grandfather clock in the corner. Each second felt like a falling hammer, driving the reality of Julian’s confession deeper into the fabric of the room. Thomas Vance sank heavily into a burgundy leather armchair, pressing his trembling hands against his face as if trying to block out the horrific transformation of his younger brother into a cold-blooded pragmatist.

"Julian," Thomas murmured through his fingers, his voice cracked and aged by the sudden weight of the revelation. "Margaret trusted you. We all trusted you. How could you trade a human life for ledgers and property titles?"

Julian stopped his frantic pacing, leaning his back against the cold brick of the inactive fireplace. His chest heaved beneath the fine fabric of his formal grey suit, and the pristine white shirt collar now looked like a noose he had tied himself. "You don't understand how close we were to ruin," Julian defended himself, his voice dropping into a desperate, whining register. "The investments in the overseas shipping ports collapsed. The creditors were circling like vultures. If Margaret had dissolved her share of the estate, our entire social standing, our businesses, everything we built would have vanished overnight."

"So you murdered her," Elena stated, her voice devoid of inflection, terrifyingly calm. She stood sentinel beside Clara’s chair, one hand resting gently on the back of the little girl’s curly brown hair. "You poisoned her slowly, night after night, while she thanked you for the water. You watched her fade away, pretending to be the devoted, suffering husband for the benefit of the boardrooms and charity balls."

"It was painless!" Julian hissed, taking a defensive step forward before stopping under the blistering weight of Elena’s glare. "The doctor confirmed her heart simply stopped. No one would have ever looked closer if this child hadn't developed an overactive imagination and started repeating things she couldn't possibly understand."

"She understood because she loved her mother," Elena countered, her eyes flashing with a fierce, protective fire. "Children notice the absence of warmth long before adults do. Clara saw you lock that door. She saw the dark bottle. And tonight, the truth caught up with you in front of every prominent figure in the city."

Clara lifted her head from the white stuffed rabbit, her large, tear-filled eyes blinking up at Elena. "Are the police coming?" she whispered, the innocent question cutting through the tense atmosphere like a scalpel.

Elena knelt down once more, offering the little girl a reassuring, gentle smile. "Yes, sweetheart. They are on their way. You don't have to be afraid anymore. Nobody is ever going to hurt you or lie to you again."

Thomas slowly lowered his hands, looking at his brother with a gaze entirely devoid of pity. He reached into his breast pocket, pulled out a vintage silver-plated flip phone, and pressed a speed-dial button. He didn't look at Julian as he spoke into the receiver. "Get me the precinct downtown. Tell them Chief Inspector Vance is requesting an immediate unit at the estate. We have a confession to a homicide."
