Chapter 7 - The Scraped Label

Detective Miller didn't look like an action hero; he looked like a tired accountant in an ill-fitting gray suit, with dark circles etched under his eyes. He held up the plastic bag, showing the scratched surface of the amber vial.

"Mr. Vance? Mrs. Vance?" Miller nodded curtly. "The patrol officers on scene took this into custody per standard protocol for an unattended infant call. Our crime lab ran an alternate light source over the adhesive residue ten minutes ago."

Evelyn didn't move, but her fingers gripped the paper coffee cup so hard the cardboard buckled, hot liquid splashing over her manicured thumb. She did not wince.

"And what did they find, Detective?" Mark asked, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"The label was scraped with a serrated kitchen blade, but the heat-transfer ink on the lower adhesive layer left a thermal impression on the plastic," Miller said, looking directly at Evelyn. "The prescription was filled yesterday afternoon at the CVS on Route 9. The patient name wasn't Elena Vance. It was Evelyn Vance."

"That’s absurd," Evelyn said, laughing dismissively, though the sound was brittle and high. "I keep my medication in my bag. I told Mark this. Perhaps Elena stole a spare bottle from my luggage while I was unpacking."

"The prescription wasn't for Zolpidem," Miller continued calmly, not breaking eye contact. "It was for liquid Chloral Hydrate. A pediatric sedative prescribed to you three years ago for your chronic neurological spasms, refilled yesterday via an old mail-order loop."

The hallway went dead silent. Even Clara seemed to hush in Mark’s arms.

"Liquid?" Mark whispered, his stomach turning over. "The residue on her chin..."

"Liquid sedatives act four times faster than tablets," Dr. Chen interjected, her medical demeanor vanishing into sheer professional horror. "Especially when forced down an airway. It would explain the immediate respiratory collapse."

"This is an outrage," Evelyn snapped, her voice finally losing its velvet sheen, revealing the sharp iron beneath. "You are taking the word of a botched chemical test over the reputation of a woman who served thirty years on the county school board? Mark, take Clara and let us go home. We are not answering any more questions without your father's lawyer present."

"My father died ten years ago, Evelyn," Mark said, his voice devoid of all warmth, all filial deference, stripped bare to pure disgust. "And you aren't touching this baby again."

Miller took a step closer to Evelyn. "Mrs. Vance, we have a search warrant currently being executed at your son's residence. If you wouldn't mind accompanying me down to the precinct for an official statement, we can clear this up."

"I am going nowhere," Evelyn said, her chin jutting out like a blade.

Behind them, the ICU doors burst open, and a nurse ran toward Dr. Chen. "Doctor! Bed four is coding. Cardiac arrest!"
