Chapter 13 - The Awakening

Mark sprinted back toward the intensive care unit, his heart hammering against his ribs like a caged bird. The blaring alarm overhead suddenly shut off, replaced by the low, insistent hum of medical equipment and the hurried whispers of staff.
Inside room four, Dr. Chen was leaning over the bed, penlight in hand.
Elena was coughing, a violent, retching sound as her throat rejected the thick plastic endotracheal tube. Her hands were twitching, fingers curling into the bedsheets, knuckles white. Her dark eyes, unfocused and glassy, were half-open, tracking the harsh ceiling lights.
"Elena," Mark choked out, rushing to the side of the bed. He grabbed her hand, bringing it to his lips. "Elena, can you hear me? I’m here. Mark is here."
Dr. Chen signaled to the respiratory therapist. "Suction ready. On three. One, two, three—pull."
The tube slipped out with a sickening slide. Elena gasped, choking on air, her back arching off the mattress as she drew her first unassisted breath in twelve hours. She turned her head toward Mark, her chest heaving under the thin hospital gown.
"M... Mark..." she whispered, her voice like sandpaper grating on gravel.
"I’m here, baby. I'm right here," Mark wept, kissing her forehead, her cheek, her cold fingers. "You're safe. Clara is safe. We’re in the hospital."
Elena’s eyes widened suddenly, a flash of pure terror piercing through the sedative haze. Her fingers clamped onto Mark’s wrist with surprising strength, her nails digging into his skin.
"The... the tea..." she rasped, her lips trembling, saliva pooling at the corner of her mouth.
"What?" Mark leaned closer, his ear inches from her lips. "What did you say?"
"She... she brought me tea," Elena gasped, tears spilling over her pale cheeks, cutting lines through the dried sweat. "Said... said I looked tired. Wanted to make peace. Clara was crying... I went to pick her up..."

Elena’s breathing turned ragged, her pulse monitor beeping with increasing speed.
"She held me, Mark. She put her hand over my mouth. She poured the bitter medicine down my throat while I was pinned against the rug. She told me... she told me you never loved me. She told me... you asked her to get rid of me."
