Chapter 14 - The Indictment

The silence that followed in the ICU room was suffocating. Dr. Chen stood completely still, her hand resting on the chart. Detective Miller, standing in the doorway with his badge out, took out a small digital recorder and let it run, capturing every fractured, sobbing word.
"She told me... you wanted Clara to have a real mother," Elena wept, her body shaking with tremors of shock. "She said... you were waiting in the car for her to finish. Mark... tell me you didn't... tell me you didn't know..."
"No! Never! God, Elena, no!" Mark fell to his knees beside the bed, burying his face in her hospital blanket, weeping violently. "I love you. You are my whole life. I would die before I let anyone hurt you. She’s a monster, Elena. She lied to you. She tried to tear us apart."
Elena’s shaking hand moved slowly, resting on the crown of his head, her fingers threading through his messy hair. The touch was weak, but the forgiveness in it shattered Mark completely.
Detective Miller stepped forward, his face like carved obsidian. He tapped the microphone on his lapel. "Miller to dispatch. Upgrade suspect Evelyn Vance's charges to Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Kidnapping, and Tampering with Evidence. Cancel bail privileges immediately under special circumstances. Arrest the transport attorneys outside. We have a direct victim statement."
From out in the hallway, the sound of commotion flared up. Evelyn Vance, her silver hair disheveled, her expensive coat torn from the scuffle, was being held by three county deputies.
"Get your hands off me!" her voice shrilled down the corridor, stripped entirely of its aristocratic calm. "I am a Vance! You will lose your badges for this! Mark! Mark, you ungrateful wretch, tell them to release me!"
Mark stood up slowly. He smoothed Elena’s hair, kissed her forehead once more, and turned toward the door.
He walked out into the corridor. The nurses stepped back, clearing a path.
Evelyn was struggling against the handcuffs, her face red, veins standing out on her neck like cords. When she saw Mark, her eyes flashed with venomous desperation. "Mark! Tell this detective the truth! Tell him your wife is insane! You know what she's like! Tell them, or I will disown you from every trust fund your father left behind!"
Mark stopped three feet away from her. He looked at the woman who had brought him into the world, the woman who had ruled his thoughts with an iron fist of guilt and fear for three decades. He felt no anger. He felt no hatred.
He felt entirely, beautifully empty.

"My father didn't crash that car by accident, did he?" Mark said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
Evelyn froze, the color draining instantly from her face.
