Chapter 12 - The Pediatric Ward

"Security!" Mark screamed, dropping the phone and throwing open the ICU sliding door. "Security! Code Pink! She’s going after the nursery!"

Alarms immediately shattered the hospital's dawn silence. Klaxons began to wail overhead, a piercing electronic tone signaling an infant abduction threat. The ICU nurses jumped from their stations, but Evelyn didn't run. She simply stood her ground, stepping directly into Mark’s path as he tried to sprint down the hallway, her face twisted in sneering defiance.

"You can't touch me, Mark!" she shouted over the alarms. "The court order gives me legal possession! You're the one committing a crime by interfering!"

Mark didn't slow down. Thirty-four years of filial fear, of swallowing his tongue, of letting his mother manipulate every corner of his life dissolved into pure, primal instinct. He lowered his shoulder and barreled straight through her, shoving her violently into the plastic row of waiting room chairs. Evelyn crashed down with a shriek of indignation, her coffee thermos shattering across the floor.

"Mark!" she shrieked from the ground. "How dare you!"

Mark sprinted down the linoleum corridor toward the pediatric wing, his socks sliding slightly on the polished floor. Ahead, the two men in suits were already trying to force open the magnetized nursery fire doors, which had locked automatically when the alarm sounded.

"Step away from the doors!" Detective Miller's voice boomed from the stairwell.

Miller burst into the hallway, his service weapon drawn, both hands locked onto the grip. "Step away and put your hands on your heads! Right now!"

The two men froze. One of them reached toward his lapel, but Miller didn't hesitate. "Don't do it! Down on the floor! Face down! Spread your legs!"

The men, realizing they were outgunned and caught under hospital surveillance cameras, slowly dropped to their knees, raising their open palms into the air.

Mark reached the glass observation window of the nursery. Inside, three nurses were huddled over Clara’s crib, shielding the infant with their own bodies. Clara was safe. She was crying, startled by the sirens, but she was untouched.

Mark pressed his forehead against the heavy glass, tears of relief burning his cheeks.

Then, behind him, a low, wet gasp echoed from the direction of the ICU. A nurse came running down the hall, waving her arms frantically.

"Mr. Vance! Detective! Come quickly! Bed four is moving!"
