Chapter 15

The final morning of Julian’s trip arrived with a brilliant, clear sunrise that flooded the kitchen with golden light. Clara sat at the breakfast bar sipping her morning coffee, watching the baby play happily with his wooden stacking rings on the tiled floor. The house was quiet, peaceful, and entirely secure.
Her phone chimed gently on the counter. It was a video call notification from Julian, waiting in his Chicago hotel lobby before his big presentation. Clara swiped to answer, her face immediately lighting up as Julian’s tall frame appeared on the screen, wearing a sharp button-down shirt instead of his usual plaid.
“Morning, my loves,” Julian said, his smile beaming through the digital screen.
“Good morning, Daddy,” Clara replied, turning the phone so Julian could see the baby waving his wooden ring at the camera. The baby let out a happy gurgle, babbling excitedly at the screen.
“How are my two favorite people holding down the fort?” Julian asked, his eyes filled with warmth.
“We’re doing great,” Clara said, her voice steady, confident, and filled with a profound sense of peace. “We went for our morning walk, the coffee is hot, and we’re ready to conquer the day.”
“Good,” Julian said, taking a breath before his presentation called him away. “I love you, Clara. See you tomorrow.”
“We love you too, Julian. Go crush it.”
Clara hung up the call and placed her phone down on the quartz countertop. She took a slow, deep breath of the morning air, feeling the steady, healthy rhythm of her own heart. She walked over to the refrigerator to grab a fresh carton of milk for the baby’s breakfast. As she pulled it out, her hand slipped just an inch, and a single drop of condensation fell onto the tiled floor.

Clara paused, looking down at the tiny droplet. She didn’t tense up; she didn’t feel a wave of dread or panic. Instead, a small, knowing smile played across her lips. She reached for a paper towel, wiped the tiny spot away with a calm, effortless motion, and tossed it into the trash.
She turned back to her son, scooped him up into her arms, and held him tight against her chest as sunlight poured through the kitchen windows, illuminating a future that was bright, boundless, and entirely their own.
