Chapter 14

The evening before Julian’s trip to Chicago arrived with a gentle, golden sunset that painted the kitchen walls in shades of amber and rose. Clara was busy preparing dinner while the baby slept peacefully in his crib down the hall. The house was calm, filled with the soft strains of acoustic guitar music playing quietly from the Bluetooth speaker on the counter.
Julian walked into the kitchen carrying his half-packed suitcase, setting it gently near the doorway. He walked up behind Clara, wrapping his arms around her waist as she stirred a pot of simmering risotto.
“All packed?” Clara asked, turning her head slightly to offer him a warm smile.
“All packed,” Julian confirmed, resting his chin on her shoulder. “And honestly? I’m already missing you guys. Three days is going to feel like a month.”
“We’ll FaceTime you every single day,” Clara promised, turning around in his arms to face him directly. She reached up, straightening the collar of his plaid shirt. “You’re going to crush that presentation. You’ve earned this.”
Julian smiled, his hands resting securely on her hips. His gaze wandered briefly down toward the tiled floor near the refrigerator, then back up to her face. A quiet, knowing smile touched his lips. “Remember when we thought a spilled carton of milk was the end of the world?”
Clara let out a genuine, carefree laugh that echoed off the kitchen walls. “I was so terrified of everything back then. I thought every mistake meant I wasn't cut out for motherhood.”
“And now?” Julian asked softly.

“Now I know that mistakes are just part of living,” Clara said, her dark eyes shining with quiet strength. “We don’t need perfection, Julian. We just need each other.”
Julian pulled her into a deep, tender embrace, holding her as the evening light settled across the kitchen. The journey they had traveled—from isolation and quiet despair to resilience and unshakable partnership—was etched into every corner of the home they had built together.
