Chapter 9

The tension in the grand foyer reached a breaking point as Clara reached the bottom of the landing, standing just a few feet away from Julian. Detective Miller stepped inside the doorway, flanked by two uniformed officers who moved quickly to secure the perimeter. Julian stared at the flash drive in Clara’s hand, his face draining of all color. For the first time since he had entered the dining room hours earlier, his imposing facade cracked.

“Where did you get that?” Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of disbelief and pure, unadulterated terror.

“From the wall safe behind the portrait of your first wife,” Clara replied, her voice steady and sharp as a razor. “The safe you thought only you had the combination to. You forgot, Julian, that sisters share secrets long before men like you ever learn how to buy them.”

Miller stepped forward, holding out his hand. “Mrs. Vance, I’ll take that evidence now. It will be logged into the state repository immediately.”

Before Clara could hand over the drive, Julian lunged forward with the speed of a striking predator, aiming directly for Clara’s throat. But he never made contact. One of the uniformed officers tackled him mid-air, slamming his heavy frame against the marble floor with a resounding crash. Metal cuffs clicked sharply into place around Julian’s wrists as he thrashed and cursed against the cold stone.

“You think you’ve won?” Julian roared, spitting blood onto the pristine white marble as the officers hauled him to his feet. “This entire company will collapse without me! Every person in this room will lose everything!”

“We already lost everything the day you decided money was worth more than a human life,” Clara said, looking down at him without a single trace of emotion. “Game over, Julian.”

As the officers dragged Julian out into the pouring rain toward the waiting cruiser, the heavy front doors closed behind them, shutting out the storm. The silence that settled over the grand foyer was profound, heavy with the weight of three years of lies finally dragged out into the harsh light of day.
