Chapter 15

The autumn chill had given way to the crisp, clean air of early spring, bringing with it the scent of blooming jasmine and freshly turned earth across the Vance estate. The iron gates stood open, no longer a barrier keeping the world out, but an invitation welcoming life back into the historic grounds.
In the newly planted garden behind the kitchen wing, Lily knelt in the rich soil, carefully pressing small daffodil bulbs into the earth under Mary’s watchful eye. Her hands were dusted with dirt, and her laughter rang out clear and joyful across the lawn, carrying away the lingering ghosts of the past.
Clara stood on the stone patio overlooking the garden, holding a steaming cup of tea. She wore a light cream cardigan over a simple silk dress, her blonde hair catching the golden afternoon light. The glittering sequin gown and the heavy diamonds of that fateful night felt like relics of a distant lifetime—a costume worn by a woman who no longer existed.
Arthur stepped out onto the patio, handing her a freshly delivered letter bearing the official seal of the state historical society.
“They approved the application for the Sarah Vance Memorial Library downtown,” Arthur said with a warm smile. “The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for next month.”
Clara opened the envelope, reading the official approval letter with a profound sense of closure. Every promise she had made to her sister in the dark hours of her grief was finally being fulfilled. The legacy of fear that Julian had tried to build had been completely dismantled, replaced by something enduring, meaningful, and genuinely good.
Footsteps approached from behind, and a pair of small, dirt-smudged arms wrapped around Clara’s waist. Clara looked down, setting her teacup aside to kneel in the grass beside Lily.
“Are you coming to help me plant the last row, Mom?” Lily asked, looking up with eyes full of absolute trust and boundless love.

Clara smiled, brushing a smudge of dirt from the tip of the girl’s nose.
“Always, sweetheart,” Clara whispered, taking Lily’s small hand in hers as they turned together toward the blooming garden under the warm, unending spring sun.
