Chapter 6

Upstairs in the private study, the air was thick with cigar smoke and bourbon. Julian did not wait for Arthur to finish briefing him on the impending scandal. He paced behind his massive mahogany desk, his heavy boots striking the Persian rug with calculated force. The mahogany paneling of the room was decorated with hunting trophies and ancient maps, symbols of a dominance that was now beginning to fray at the edges.

The heavy door swung open without a knock, and Clara entered. She had changed into a dark emerald silk robe, her blonde hair falling in loose, natural waves around her shoulders. She looked less like a socialite and more like a predator preparing for the final strike.

“I know the state investigator is at the gate, Julian,” Clara said calmly, walking over to the crystal decanter and pouring herself two fingers of neat whiskey. “Arthur just called me from the east wing before his phone went dead. It seems your past financial engineering is finally coming home to roost.”

Julian stopped pacing, turning to face her with eyes full of venom. “You leaked it, didn’t you? You miserable, calculating witch. You’ve been gathering documents from my private safe ever since the day we married.”

Clara took a slow sip of the amber liquid, savoring the burn before setting the glass down on the edge of the desk. She walked toward him, stopping just out of arm’s reach, her gaze unwavering.

“I didn’t have to leak anything, Julian. You left a trail a mile wide when you liquidated Sarah’s estate to fund your hostile takeover of the shipping ports three years ago,” Clara said, her voice entirely devoid of panic. “You thought you could buy your way out of grief by replacing her with a younger model and burying her assets in offshore accounts. But murder leaves a paper trail, Julian. And greed leaves an even bigger one.”

Julian lunged forward, grabbing the lapels of her emerald robe, lifting her slightly off the floor in a surge of blind rage. “One more word and I swear to God I will make sure you vanish the exact same way she did. No one will ever find you.”

Clara didn’t struggle. Instead, she smiled, a thin, chilling expression that reached her eyes.

“Go ahead, Julian,” she whispered, her voice echoing in the silent, wood-paneled room. “Kill me. But remember—the moment I stop breathing, an encrypted file containing every single bank transfer, medical report, and police cover-up goes straight to the federal prosecutor. You’re already dead, Julian. You just haven’t stopped breathing yet.”
