Chapter 6: Unraveling the Web

Viktor walked over to the rocking chair, staring down at his sleeping son with a look of profound sorrow. He gently reached out, brushing a finger against the baby's soft cheek before looking up at Maya. "Running won't solve this, Maya. Clara has tentacles everywhere—judges, doctors, politicians. If we just disappear, she will hunt us down and frame you for kidnapping or worse. We have to dismantle her influence from the inside, and we have to do it legally and permanently."

Maya crossed her arms, standing her ground against the billionaire. "And how do you propose we do that? Your mother owns half the boardrooms in this city. A simple accusation won't destroy a lifetime of carefully curated philanthropy and power."

"We don't use a simple accusation," Viktor replied, his tone hardening as his executive instincts took over. "We use her own network against her. Miller is already digging into her recent pharmacy records. But we need more. We need to find out why she is doing this. What does she gain by harming the heir to the Sterling estate? It makes no rational sense."

"Maybe it’s not about logic," Maya suggested, stepping closer. "Maybe it’s about control. Have you noticed how she treats you? Even as a grown man running a multi-billion-dollar corporation, you still walk on eggshells around her. She doesn't want an heir who grows up to challenge her authority. She wants a puppet, or perhaps..." Maya paused, a terrifying thought dawning on her. "Perhaps Leo isn't the first."

Viktor’s breath caught in his throat. The memory of his older brother’s tragic, sudden illness years ago flashed through his mind—an unexplained childhood tragedy that had devastated the family and left Viktor as the sole remaining heir. He had been too young to question the medical reports back then, too grief-stricken to look for foul play. Could Clara’s dark history stretch back decades? The thought was so grotesque, so profoundly unnatural, that Viktor felt physically sick. He gripped the back of the rocking chair for support, his knuckles turning white.

"We check the old medical archives," Viktor whispered, the resolve solidifying in his chest. "My father's private records are kept in the vault behind the study. If there are answers, they are locked away in that house."
