Chapter 2: The Weight of Suspicion

Viktor knelt beside his mother, offering a strong hand to help her up, though his eyes remained fixed on Maya. Clara accepted the assistance with measured grace, her movements deliberate and controlled. She adjusted the sparkly blue fabric of her dress, her expression shifting from surprise to a mask of wounded matriarchal authority. She looked at her son with soft, theatrical disappointment, as if dealing with a misguided child. Maya stood her ground, clutching little Leo tighter against her chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of the baby's tiny heart. She knew the power dynamic in this house was entirely stacked against her. Viktor was a man accustomed to buying solutions, and Clara was the architect of their social standing.

"Viktor, darling," Clara murmured, her voice smooth and devoid of panic. "The girl has clearly lost her mind. Working long hours has broken her nerves. Look at her; she is hysterical."

Maya’s jaw tightened. "I am not hysterical," she countered, her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. She pointed again at the bottle. "Smell it, Mr. Sterling. Just smell it. It is not the standard formula. It smells like crushed sedatives. I saw her pouring it in. If I had been two seconds slower, your son would be sleeping a sleep he might not have woken from."

Viktor’s gaze shifted to the high chair tray. The small glass bottle sat there, a tiny vessel of potential poison. He stood up slowly, towering over both women, and reached out. His large hand wrapped around the warm glass. He brought it close to his face, removing the nipple with a quiet pop. A faint, bitter chemical odor drifted up, cutting sharply through the sweet scent of baby formula. Viktor’s expression hardened. The aggressive anger from moments ago vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating focus that was far more dangerous. He knew the scent of sedatives; his business dealings often exposed him to ruthless people, but he never expected to find that kind of ruthlessness in his own nursery, administered by his own mother.
