Chapter 4: The Midnight Ultimatum

Julian leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms over his chest as he observed the quiet tableau before him. The sight of his daughter holding onto the woman who had betrayed him struck a raw, exposed nerve. He cleared his throat lightly, the sound cutting through the quiet intimacy of the moment.
"She shouldn't be involved in this, Elena," Julian said, his voice markedly lower than it had been downstairs. There was no shouting left in him, only a flat, heavy exhaustion.
Elena stood up slowly, keeping a protective hand on Lily’s shoulder. "I'm telling her only what she needs to know, Julian. I am not poisoning her against you. That’s a role you seem entirely capable of carving out for yourself."
Julian jaw tightened, a silent warning that he was restraining a sharp retort for the sake of their daughter. He looked down at Lily, his expression softening just enough to reveal the fractured father beneath the icy corporate exterior. "Go back to bed, Lily. Nanny is waiting in the hallway. I need to speak with your mother alone for a few minutes."
Lily looked hesitatingly between them, sensing that the storm had not yet passed, but she obeyed. She walked out of the bedroom, offering her mother one last heartbreaking backward glance before closing the door softly behind her.
As the lock clicked into place, the atmosphere in the room shifted instantly. Julian walked over to the edge of the king-sized bed, sitting down on the mattress as if his legs could no longer support his weight. He rubbed his face with both hands, letting out a long, shuddering sigh.
"Marcus called," Julian said, his voice muffled through his palms.
Elena froze, her hand hovering over the half-packed suitcase. "When?"
"While you were upstairs. He wanted to make sure you were safe." Julian dropped his hands, staring up at her with red-rimmed, bloodshot eyes. "How long, Elena? How long has it been?"
"Six months," Elena answered honestly, knowing that lies would only prolong the agony. "It started casually, Julian. Just coffee after charity board meetings. But we found something in each other that we had both lost years ago. We found understanding."
"Understanding," Julian repeated bitterly, letting out a harsh, humorless laugh. "Is that what you call sneaking around behind my back, using our home as a rendezvous point while my daughter plays innocent messenger? You humiliated me, Elena. In my own house. At my own dinner table."
May you like
"I never wanted to humiliate you," Elena said, stepping closer to him, though keeping a safe distance. "I wanted a divorce months ago, but you refused to even discuss it. You were too invested in maintaining the illusion of the perfect family for your business associates and board members."
"Because reputation matters in my world!" Julian shouted softly, standing up abruptly. "You don't build an empire by letting your personal life fall apart in public!"
