Chapter 13: An Unexpected Encounter

The Italian bistro on 4th Street buzzed with the gentle murmur of weekend diners and the soft strains of Italian jazz floating through the ceiling speakers. Elena sat at a corner table, sipping sparkling water while waiting for Marcus to arrive. She wore a simple emerald green blouse that accentuated her eyes, feeling more confident and at peace than she had in years.

The front door opened, carrying a brief gust of cool autumn air into the warm restaurant. Elena looked up, expecting to see Marcus walking through the threshold. Instead, her breath caught in her throat as she saw Julian standing near the host stand. He was alone, dressed in a sharp navy blazer—though without the tie this time—looking around the room before his eyes locked onto hers.

For a fraction of a second, both of them froze. The memory of their previous dinner at this very establishment rushed back with visceral intensity. But the tension that usually accompanied their encounters did not materialize. Instead, Julian offered a tentative, respectful nod of acknowledgment and began walking toward her table.

Elena braced herself, gripping the stem of her water glass. Julian stopped a few feet away from the booth, his expression solemn yet composed.

"Elena," Julian said quietly. "I didn't mean to intrude. I see you're waiting for someone."

"Marcus will be here in a few minutes," Elena answered honestly, keeping her voice calm and steady. "Is everything all right with Lily? Did something happen?"

"No, Lily is fine. She's asleep at my place, completely exhausted from the park," Julian assured her quickly, stuffing his hands casually into his pockets. He looked down at the floor for a brief moment before meeting her gaze again. "I just wanted to say... I saw the quarterly acquisition report from Sterling & Vance. Your name was on the lead curation team for the modern abstract exhibit."

Elena blinked in surprise, her guard dropping slightly. "How did you know about that?"

"It's my industry, Elena. Word travels fast when a major corporate collection hits a home run," Julian said, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. "It was brilliant work. I just... I wanted to acknowledge that. You always had an incredible eye for art, and I was too blind and arrogant to support you stepping back into your career."

The admission hung in the air between them, heavy with years of unspoken apologies and unfulfilled potential. It wasn't a dramatic reconciliation, nor did it erase the painful wreckage of their failed marriage, but it was a profound step toward closure.
