Chapter 10: The Terms of Engagement

Elena stared across the small table at the man she had shared eight years of her life with. The anger that had fueled her survival over the past week suddenly felt heavy and exhausting. Julian was admitting fault—not fully, perhaps, but enough to acknowledge the collateral damage of his unyielding pride.

"Fixing the co-parenting requires more than a casual dinner, Julian," Elena said, keeping her tone measured and analytical. "It requires mutual respect, clear boundaries, and zero manipulation regarding Lily."

"Agreed," Julian said without hesitation. He reached inside his jacket pocket and pulled out a manila folder, sliding it across the polished wooden table toward her. "I had my attorney draft a revised custody agreement. You get Lily every weekend from Friday evening through Sunday night, plus two afternoons during the week. And regarding financial support... I've instructed my team to unfreeze your personal accounts and provide a monthly maintenance stipend until you secure permanent employment."

Elena looked down at the manila folder, then back up at Julian with profound skepticism. "What's the catch? You don't just hand over financial independence and liberal custody without a hidden clause."

"There is no catch, Elena," Julian replied quietly, leaning back against the booth. "Just a realization that punishing you financially only hurts Lily in the long run. I want my daughter to see her mother living with dignity, not struggling in a shoebox apartment just to prove a point to me."

Elena felt a lump form in her throat. The gesture was unexpectedly humane, cutting through the armor she had carefully constructed around her heart. She opened the folder, scanning the legal terms. It was fair—remarkably fair, considering the bitter circumstances of their parting.

"Thank you, Julian," she said softly, the words tasting foreign yet necessary.

Before Julian could reply, his phone buzzed violently on the table. He glanced down at the screen, and his expression instantly hardened, the vulnerable facade evaporating to reveal the hardened corporate executive once more. He silenced the phone, but the damage to the fragile peace between them was already done.

"Work?" Elena asked, raising an eyebrow.

"A crisis at the firm," Julian muttered, standing up abruptly from the booth. He laid a hundred-dollar bill on the table to cover the drinks and looked down at Elena with a mixture of regret and determination. "We'll finalize the paperwork through our lawyers tomorrow. Have a good evening, Elena."

As Julian walked briskly out of the bistro, Elena sat alone in the dim booth, staring at the manila folder. Her phone buzzed in her purse. She pulled it out and saw a notification from Sarah Jenkins at Sterling & Vance: Please check your email. We would like to extend an offer.
