Chapter 8

Dr. Hayes climbed the rusted rungs of the iron ladder with surprising agility, reaching up to disengage the heavy mechanical latch securing the street-level hatch. With a sharp metallic groan, the iron door pushed upward, admitting a rush of cool, crisp night air mixed with the distant sound of city traffic and distant sirens. A shaft of pale moonlight cut through the darkness of the subterranean tunnel, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air around Elena and the baby bassinet.

"Up you go, Elena," Hayes urged, descending a few rungs to help lift the bassinet toward the opening. "I'll take the front, you take the back. We need to move the bassinet gently so the wheels don't catch on the grate frame."

Working together in synchronized silence, they hoisted the clear bassinet through the hatch into the narrow, shadowed alleyway behind the hospital's municipal annex. The damp brick walls of the adjacent buildings rose up like a canyon, blocking the view of the main street but offering a direct route toward the city subway entrance two blocks away. Elena climbed out of the hatch last, pulling herself onto the asphalt and taking her first unrestricted breath of fresh air in hours. Her striped hospital gown flapped lightly in the midnight breeze, reminding her of how vulnerable she still was.

Before Hayes could pull the iron hatch fully closed, a harsh spotlight flared to life at the far end of the alley. A security vehicle idling near the loading dock rounded the corner, its high beams cutting through the darkness and pinning them against the brick wall. A harsh loudspeaker voice crackled across the alley: "Hold where you are! Do not move!"

"Run!" Hayes shouted, grabbing the front handle of the bassinet alongside Elena as they bolted down the alleyway toward the distant glow of the streetlamps. The heavy boots of pursuing guards echoed off the brick walls behind them, accompanied by the urgent barking of a security dog that had been released from the loading bay. Adrenaline surged through Elena’s veins, dulling the pain in her bare feet as she sprinted across the rough asphalt, keeping her entire focus on protecting the bassinet from the violent vibrations of their escape.

They rounded a sharp corner into a bustling commercial street, blending instantly into the midnight crowd spilling out from a late-night transit station. The security guards skidded to a halt at the mouth of the alley, blinded by the sudden influx of civilian foot traffic and unwilling to cause a public scene in the open street. Elena ducked behind a concrete pillar near the subway entrance, pulling the bassinet close to her body as her chest heaved with exhaustion. She looked down; Maya had stirred slightly at the commotion but remained asleep in her blue cocoon, completely safe for the moment.
