Chapter 6

The figure stepping into the dim light of the archive aisle was not a security guard, nor was it one of the administrative agents in gray suits. It was an older man with graying hair, wearing a rumpled tweed jacket over a physician's scrub top. He carried a small black medical bag in one hand and a portable flashlight in the other, keeping the beam pointed low toward the floor to avoid detection. As he caught sight of Elena standing tensely behind the metal shelving, he raised his free hand in a universal gesture of peace, stopping several yards away.

"Don't run," the man said softly, his voice gravelly and worn with exhaustion. "If you try to take the service elevator right now, you'll walk right into the security detail currently locking down the loading dock."

Elena tightened her grip on the bassinet, her eyes wide and defensive. "Who are you? Are you with Dr. Vance?"

"My name is Dr. Hayes," the man replied, stepping slowly closer while keeping his palms visible. "I used to be the head of pediatric research here before they pushed me out for refusing to falsify patient outcomes. I saw Evelyn get pulled away by security ten minutes ago. She managed to drop this for you before they took her phone."

Hayes extended his hand, holding out a small, encrypted flash drive bearing Evelyn’s initials scratched into the plastic casing. Elena stared at the drive, weighing the risk. "Why should I trust you? Everyone in this hospital is tied to what's happening to my daughter."

"If I wanted to turn you in, I wouldn't have spent the last hour hacking the basement security protocols to disable the motion sensors in this sector," Hayes said quietly, his gaze shifting with profound sorrow toward the sleeping infant in the bassinet. "That little girl has a rare chromosomal marker that the board has been hunting for months. They believe it makes her immune to the viral vectors they're testing in their Phase Three trials. They don't want to treat her, Elena; they want to harvest her genetic data and lock you both away where no one will ever find you."

The words hit Elena like a physical blow. The abstract fear she had felt upstairs suddenly crystallized into a terrifying, undeniable reality. She looked down at Maya, who remained oblivious to the predatory forces swirling around her. Elena’s hesitation melted into a fierce, unwavering resolve. She couldn't fight this alone, and Dr. Hayes represented the only bridge between raw survival and exposing the truth to the outside world.

"What do we do?" Elena asked, her voice steadying as she stepped out from the shadows of the shelving units.

Hayes smiled faintly, a look of grim determination crossing his features. "We use their own secure network against them. There’s an old analog telephone line in the maintenance annex that bypasses the hospital’s digital switchboard entirely. From there, we can leak Evelyn’s files and the entire archive registry to the state attorney general before the morning shift arrives. But we have to move now before security realizes we're down here."
